The illegal dumping of waste material in the area located opposite the Government’s Motor Pool has been making rounds on social media with both the Government and residents being concerned about the damage caused to the environment as a result.
When the team visited the site, the entrance to the property was blocked by a bulldozer owned and operated by a private entity.
Minister of Health Molwyn Joseph is of the belief that the heavy duty equipment was placed there to ensure the businessman has control over who dumps on the site and not to actually put an end to the illegal dumping.
Officials say the three parcels of land being backfilled with waste material is not being leased or rented by any person. The last time a parcel of the land was leased was in 2010.
Joseph today instructed the police to warn the businessman allegedly responsible to not only cease and desist from the illegal practice but to have the bulldozer removed from the property.
“Failure to do so may result in confiscation of the equipment,” a statement from the ministry of health said.
Minister Joseph also voiced his dissatisfaction with the lawlessness being demonstrated by the truck drivers who continue to offload their waste material at the site noting that the ONLY legal dumpsite is the Cooks Landfill.
Meanwhile, the Health Minister is hopeful that the new Litter Control and Prevention Bill 2018 will encourage persons to cease and desist from the illegal practice.
He noted that as it stands, the person who has been carrying out the illegal dumping can only be fined $200 but the proposed legislation is expected to be a deterrent with the possibility of being fined $5000.
