Director of Education Clare Browne says he’s standing behind a decision to expel two Ottos Comprehensive School students who stabbed a classmate six times.

Browne defended the decision of the ministry after some members of the public took the position that the punishment is unfair.

The director says schools must be maintained as safe places for children.

“When a parent sends his son or daughter to any public school in this country, the parent must be able to go to work and feel that his son or daughter is in a safe environment,” Browne told state media.

The teens were expelled after the classroom fight which occurred in January.

Browne said before the decision to expel, the ministry heard from all sides.

“In the end, it was determined that the student (who did the act), as well as another student that assisted him in the stabbing, were to be expelled and we expelled those two students.”

In recounting what the ministry saw as the facts of the case, the education official revealed that the rift had been a long-standing one.

“Though these two young men were friends, it appears that there were some longstanding issues between them both. The very student that was stabbed was stabbed a year ago by the very person who stabbed him six times this time around.”

  1. The right decision was taken… I’m a parent who tells my children, if you live by the sword you will die by it… It might not seem fair to a lot of us who know the students, but if it were any of us children were stabbed, the shoe would surely be on the other foot… Sen dem up a Comfort Hall… Too much now jack…

  2. Right decision. Had their thoughts been on what they were in school for, they certainly would not have a knife in their possession on the School premises.. Send them to comfort hall and make sure they are counseled and rehabilitated before they are sent back among their peers and by extension society..They are obviously filled with rage and anger which makes them a threat to anyone who they may think cross them negatively.

  3. These students are not serious about their education. Instead of trying to grasp something from the lesson being presented, they allow evil motives and negative vibes to control their thinking. Good luck with private school fees.

    ALL THE WAY

  5. Very good Mr. Brown and to the Board of Education in Antigua and Barbuda. This must send a thrilling effect to anyone who may think of being a copycats. If you got to tske a weapon to school it simple neans youre planning to do some damage wuthin the school system.

  6. So sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May God have mercy on those young people. Please beat back the forces of evil Lord, and allow your presence to hover over them. Thank you Lord.

  7. In my view Expulsion of a student should be looked at as if a person is been deported from a country..By that I mean that after deportation the individual is free and left on his own… His punishment at that point is ” missing” the country and its amenities. Hence, his/her remorse for the act becomes secondary…..The same goes for the expelled child who has not faced any additional punishment. As a result, I think the child should be punished first then be expelled from the school whenever they are found violating the rules of the school in that manner.
