Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua and Barbuda, has been voted Best Attraction in the Caribbean. Nelson’s Dockyard, the only continuously working Georgian naval dockyard in the world, topped the category in the annual 10Best Readers’ Choice Award, as voted by USA Today readers.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, Nelson’s Dockyard, which was nominated by a panel of Caribbean travel experts, is still used today as a working dockyard for numerous yachts and ships. Fully restored to its original splendor, the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century buildings of the Dockyard house modern amenities such as shops, hotels, and marina businesses. Outside the dockyard, historic forts dot the landscape of the park accessible by hiking trails which allow visitors to enjoy the park’s scenic and natural beauty.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism & Investment, Hon. Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez has high praises for the park’s staff. “We have a remarkable team at the Nelson’s Dockyard and other National Parks, that bring our intriguing heritage and rich cultural traditions alive. It is our hope that visitors to the island will experience this award-winning attraction and tour with our hospitable guides other fascinating sites such as the recently restored Clarence House, built for King William IV and visited by members of the royal family, inclusive of Princess Margaret and Prince Harry in recent years; alongside Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre, Shirley’s Heights, and Betty’s Hope,” notes Hernandez.

According to Chief Executive Officer of The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority Colin C. James, this latest accolade is welcomed and underscores the attractiveness of our island to visitors. “While we may be best known for our 365 beaches and breathtaking views, Antigua has a variety of attractions which makes it a most sought-after destination for visitors looking for relaxation, fun and great adventure. We need to extend a tremendous thank you to the scores of individuals those at home and abroad who showed their appreciation for the Nelson’s Dockyard and the work of the National Parks Authority, by voting the park into the number one spot.”

The Nelson’s Dockyard is the home to annual world-renowned events such as the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, the RORC Caribbean 600, the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, Antigua Sailing Week, the Antigua Charter Yacht Show and a host of other events for sailors and families. The Dockyard also hosts a weekly Seafood Friday, popular amongst visitors and residents.

Antigua enjoyed a number of other top ten finishes:Among them, Catherine’s Café, third in the Best Beach Bar; and Curtain Bluff, sixth in the category Best Resort. Antigua was also voted 6th in Best Island for Romance category while Dickenson Bay and Deep Bay, were seventh and eighth respectively in the Best Beach category.

  1. Deep Bay Beach is now among the worst on the island thanks to the hotel construction litter, and noise; as well as the hideous poorly constructed, most likely illegal, water cabanas.

    • Way to show some pride in your own Island. People like you are never satisfied and are always focused on the negative. Give the people their prize for working hard man!!! Show some love man.

  2. This is reprehensible at best. Antigua has the best rape, murder, dehumanizing, human trafficking facility in the Caribbean so said UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CULTURAL ORGANIZATION.

DO you feel United with them when you have to ditch out scarce resources to acquire their expensive visa to step foot in their land and they can visit your land at leisure visa free, do you feel United?

How much education can you have when you take part in this disrespectful compition?

It is a scientific fact that you are totally disconnected from the depraved dehumanization that you are absurdly celebrating.

IS SLAVERY YOUR CULTURE? YOU AFRICANS ARE SICK REAL MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY SICK.

How organized are you when you are competing with other Africans from other countries. Where is the organizing to stop the firm of slavery that is being celebrated from happening again? Where is that organizing can’t you see that’s what you are moving swiftly towards…..

    • @ Civic Pride it is sad how you embrace your slave master story but turn your back on yours ho to Bendals have some pride AND STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF OUR ANCESTORS SITE.

EXPLOSIVES ARE BEING USED TO DESTROY OUR STORY BUT YOU DO NOT CARE ABOUT THAT.

You must understand the DIFFERENCE between your history and the slave master’s story.THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING…..

  3. @ Civic Pride Tell me one positive thing about restoring, celebrating, and keeping alive the place where YOUR mother and father was sold and bought as property, rapped, murdered, stripped of dignity, beaten, humiliated, by NELSON AND HIS CAUCASION ARMY, tell me one positive thing that can come from that, just one.
Africans need a lesson in LISTENING.

PRIEST ISAAC FOR YEARS HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT A HISTORIC SITE THAT OUR ANCESTORS LEFT BEHIND, absolutely no attention paid to him or the site.

Yida was sold a historic site left behind by our ancestors to bull doze and build a GUN FACTORY .
Another was sold at Perns Point to also bull doze and build villas.

Those are the places that need preserving not NELSON HOUSE, where our parents experienced hell first hand.
John Henrik Clarke, Malcolm X Marcus Garvy, Ben Jochannan THINK THINK THINK

  4. My comment is a simple and factual observation. I moved to a home overlooking deep bay and its beach. I chose the location it for the serenity of its setting and nature’s beauty. Now am left with construction debris where my property touches the water. The view I once had, which was a beautiful bay and a beautiful beach, now comprises cabanas on the water (which should be illegal) and concrete structures on the beach. The serenity of deep bay is now gone. Pride should be in the nature and beauty of the island itself (and its people who are fantastic), not in some monstrosity of a hotel expanding its construction as far as it possibly can. I am a foreigner that once loved this island and its beauty, now I am having second thoughts.

  5. @Rastaman. I strongly suggest you listen to “Stand Up for Antigua” by King Onyan.

How do you even tolerate yourself with such negativity and toxicity?? Ever heard of CONSTRUCTIVE criticism? You are just outright negative and like to pulldown instead of building up. You are deadly. Your “friends” (if you have any left) must find it taxing to spend 20 seconds around you.

    • @Have mercy no criticism is constructive, none. It is idiotic to think criticism can be constructive.

I and I liverty depends on no one I and I is complete life and require no other for I and I upliftment.
Now understand this THE SLAVE MASTER HISTORY AND YOUR FORE PARENTS STORY ARE NOT EQUAL, IN OTHER WORDS THEY ARE NOT THE SAME

NELSON DOCKYARD belongs to your slave master not you, it is not your history as an African. That part of history belongs to your slave master NOT YOU .

The biggest disability in this country is unconscious people that think they are aware but is just existing in a comatose state.

Read Dr Sebi, John Henrik Clarke, Minister Farrakhan, Malcolm X, Hon Marcus Garvey, Ben Jochannan, and listen to great Mohammed Ali.
Then we can talk.NO THY SELF, LISTEN, THINK

      DISTRUCTION OF YOUR HISTORIC SITE
      ONE AT YIDA
      ONE AT PERNS POINT
      MOUNT ANU IN BENDALS

PRESERVATION OF YOUR SLAVE MASTER HISTORIC SITE
      NELSON’S DOCKYARD
      GOVERNMENT HOUSE
      SHIRLEYS HEIGHT
      FORTS
You are comfortable destroying yours while you take pride in restoring and maintaining theirs.. Guidance Have Mercy

    • @Have mercy you must have hundreds of friends on Facebook. Unfortunately I do not have a Facebook account so in that respect i and I have no friends.

All those places left behind by the evil SLAVE master’s should be pulled down NOT BUILD UP.

I WILL STAND UP FOR WALADLI ANY DAY. I refuse to support the Antigua cooperation. You probably do not even know what or where WALADLI is.
