A man only identified as “Gunsmoke” and another unnamed man who was only described as working at the docks by his neighbours have both lost their homes in a fire that began at around 12:50 pm on Monday.

Firefighters arrived on the scene of a blaze on Dickenson Bay Street shortly after being notified of a fire in a small 15’ x 15’ dwelling house which stood adjacent a lager 25 x 20 home on the same property on the main road.

The two gentlemen were not in their respective homes at the time of the blaze as they were both said to be at work at that time, and there were no casualties as a result of the fire.

The fire was described by eyewitnesses as originating in the smaller home and eventually spreading to the larger house in “very little time”.

“While sitting down, we took the scent of smoke,” recounted one eye-witness.

“When we came out [our house] we saw big flames to the left side of the house.”

The witnesses described the heat as “extremely hot” to the point where they feared for their own safety and began packing personal effects in case they had to leave their own home.

Two large fire tenders and a smaller one arrived on the scene along with the members of the police and the emergency medical technicians.

It took firefighters roughly two hours to completely extinguish the flames as it threatened to spread several times to nearby adjacent houses in the area.

The firefighters found themselves running their water hoses on both Bennet and Bryson’s Streets which lead into Villa from Dickenson Bay Street to spray houses behind the blaze and prevent them from catching fire.
