One thousand two hundred and seventy-nine (1,279) students will undertake the 2018 Grade Six National Assessment which commences on Wednesday.
The final assessment is the exit point for mainly 12-year-old students from public and private primary institutions.
Commenting on the preparations for the 2018 assessment, Education Officer responsible for Measurement and Evaluation, Ineta Francis says an adjustment was made to Language Arts this year. Paper one will now be in the form of a multiple choice, while students will be required to write composition, letter writing and form filling in paper two (long paper).
“In previous years, paper one was the long paper and the paper two, grammar and mechanics, was not multiple choice. It was more like a structured paper” Ms. Francis explained.
The reason for such a decision is that education officials wanted to bring the particular subject area in line with the others.
“They (assessment papers) all do have a paper one, which is a multiple choice and a paper two, which is a long paper. So it (Language Arts) falls in line with the other assessments. Also, it is similarly structured to CXC examinations,” the education officer pointed out.
Language Arts and Science will be administered on Wednesday, while on Thursday; students will be evaluated in Mathematics and Social Studies.
The Measurement and Evaluation Unit of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is finalizing administrative plans ahead of the 2018 Grade Six National Assessment.
Officials are optimistic that the placement list of students will be made available by the first week of July, 2018.
