A High Court judge ordered a man to undergo months of treatment at the Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital before he passes sentence on him.

Twenty-three-year-old Anthony Cornelius pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding after stabbing a 53-year-old man in 2016.

During a police interview, the defendant claimed the complainant was drunk and said he retaliated after the man attacked him.

However, eyewitness testimony supported the complainant’s account that the stabbing was unprovoked.

A psychiatrist reported Cornelius was diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and cannabis-induced psychosis.

The doctor revealed the defendant responded well to treatment when he was previously admitted to the psychiatric hospital but said he regressed rapidly after he was released.
