Larger Cadet Corps to address deviant youth

The Cabinet says it is considering a larger Cadet Corps to address the issue of the failure of many young males to properly discipline themselves and to remain out of trouble with the law.

If accepted, there will be the founding of a larger Cadet Corps, to be brought under the Department for Youth Affairs.

The government says the legal framework and the requirements for entry may have to be written into the law that allows alternate treatment for offenders.

“Rather than criminalize the youth and taint their future with a criminal conviction, youth may be able to join the Cadet Corps and to build self-discipline, learn skills and other types of behaviours that will be helpful rather than harmful to the society,” a Cabinet statement indicated.

The statement added that “the skewed prison population is a clear indication of the failure which many young males created for themselves. Cabinet is intent on finding solutions.”
