The Kiwanis Club of St. John’s Antigua culminated celebrations of the Club’s 20th Anniversary in grand style with an Award Ceremony for the Everett Lake Scholarship Fund and a Gala event which included the installation of the 2017-18 Board to manage the Club’s affairs.

The awards ceremony celebrated the first recipients of the Kiwanis Club of St. John’s Antigua Everett Lake Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to target students whose parents/guardian face difficult economic circumstances and are not able to provide their young children with the basic supplies for the academic year. There were ten (10) primary school awardees from a total of 23 applicants, each receiving a Certificate and $500.00 in vouchers to procure school supplies from various vendors.

Charter President Everett Lake spoke of his sense of honour having the Scholarship bear his name. He congratulated his membership on the launch of such an important initiative and advised the children to ensure that they make full use of the resources being provided through the Scholarship. The Parents were also advised to encourage the children to take care of the items procured and to work along with their children to make the best of the education opportunities provided.

Speaking on behalf of the parents/guardians of the recipients was Ms. Delisa Hazlewood, a nurse at the island’s sole emergency medial center. She thanked the Club for launching the scholarship initiative indicating that the support provided will go a long way towards easing the financial challenge of the parents/guardians of the awardee in supporting the children at school during these challenging economic times. She indicated that she was also a beneficiary of the community service work of the Kiwanis Club of St. John’s Antigua, through the Bring Up Grades program in secondary school.

The Club’s 20th anniversary Gala event, included a salute to the past presidents who have served the Clubs to date and the installation of the new President and Board.

The Club’s programs for the new Kiwanis year are already in full swing with a major community service planned for Saturday 28th October in partnership with sister club Kiwanis Club of Young Professionals and the Antigua State College Circle K and the annual Patriot’s Breakfast on Saturday 4th November.
