Gov’t Admits To Mis-steps In Prisoners Early Release

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda says the correct procedures were followed in the early release of convicts but admitted to mis-steps in the process.

Following public outcry that murder convicts and others were seen in public, Cabinet held a discussion about the early release of prisoners from Her Majesty’s Prison and the methodology by which such releases are engineered.

The Prison Superintendent, it was pointed out, “correctly made the recommendations to the Attorney General, and then the Minister in Cabinet has the responsibility to accept or reject those recommendations.”

The Cabinet said in a statement that it learned that before the date of the release, letters were written withdrawing the warrants authorizing the releases.

“Because of a lag, the withdrawals were not acted upon until after the release had taken place.

The procedure, the Cabinet agreed, was followed; however, mis-steps led to the unfortunate release of prisoners that were not entitled to be released, as previously determined by the policy of the Cabinet.”

  1. After reading the article, I now realized we have some educated dunce governing this country of Antigua and Barbuda. Help us Lord.

  2. It is good when one admit to their mistake and so I applaud the authorities here. It is the first step to taking corrective measures. The big question I wish to ask though, are all the prisoners who was originally released accounted for? I ask this question because I have heard, from a usually reliable source that 3 of the said prisoners was not found and are still outside there somewhere. I wish that someone would address this and report whether or not this is so.

  3. Round up every one of them that is “questionable” and should not have been released. I appreciate the government telling us exactly what went wrong, but the people want this thing corrected. No murderer should ever walk the streets f Antigua. Neither any child molester. Murderers should get the death penalty, just like they do in the countries of our allies, such as the USA and China. A killer is a killer is a killer.

    • From reading the above? What exactly went wrong? I don’t get it. What were the missteps in the right procedure?

Was it the AG approving them that was the impropriety? If so, how and why did it occur?

      • That crossed my mind, too.
I also wondered why, if the prison superintendent really suggested their releases, NONE OF THEM SAW THE STUPIDITY OF IT!!?? De CONSTITUTION means NOTHING to THEM SO THEY CAN MAKE A MOCKERY OF IT!!??
WELL, WELL, WELL! THAT SUGGESTOR AND ALL THEM WHO TOOK HIS ADVICE SHOULD BE RELIEVED OF THEIR OFFICES FOR THEIR APPARENT IGNORANCE OF THE LAWS AND CONSTITION OF THIS LAND.
I AM ASHAMED TO BE KNOWN AS AN ANTIGUAN.

  4. Thi is how many missteps now? So many I have stopped counting. I hope sensible people are taking note because while in opposition, and whenever Max Hurst comes on, we are told how bright this government is. If this is bright, give me back the dunce because they made more sense than this set.
