Environmental Group Boss Quits To Join UPP

The Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) says it will remain impartial even though its president for the last three years has decided to join the main opposition United Progressive Party.

The group announced over the weekend that Tahambay Smith,
indicated an interest in taking on a prominent role in the administration of the United Progressive Party and has since chosen to step down as President of the EAG, a position that he has held for three years.

“This is to ensure that the EAG remains non-partisan,” the releases stated.

It added that the EAG will continue to advocate for the environment of our twin Island state and to work for its sustainable use and development, whichever party is in power.

“We want to thank Tahambay for his service as the President and as an active member and volunteer of the EAG. His years of service to this organisation are commendable,” the EAG says.

The group noted that Smith has for over a decade, been intimately involved in safeguarding our offshore islands through the removal of invasive species that threaten the survival and rehabilitation of our endemic Antigua Racer Snake; while actively engaging in discussions about environmental issues.

The EAG itself says it has been an advocate for the environment, supporting programs and policies that ensure the sustainable use of natural resources, and speaking out when we believe that those values are being contravened. “This will never change.”

The election for a new Board will occur during our Annual General Meeting slated for April of this year.

  1. No surprise here. His rhetoric has always been anti-ABLP. Good luck to him and Richard Lewis. Lovell will not be a walkover, neither will he play fair.

  2. Would have accepted this if it did not take a public revelation of the slate and the PM pointing this out as proof of Smith, in the past using environmental issues, for partisan gains. This is the usual thing for the UPP, hiding behind so called NGO’s. Was often comical how once elected, the NGO dies and the politician emerges

    • EAG was established in 1988 and has functioned from them until today January 21st, 2019. I just despise how you sometimes make unfounded, public statements such as above. You know not a thing about the EAG and the work that it does. There are so many Antiguans and Barbudans who work extremely hard to ensure that our residents know about, appreciate and value our biodiversity, learning not to say ‘no’ to development but to make it sustainable. It’s a give and take.

      • Unfounded? Boss I stand by what I wrote. Hiding behind NGO’s has been a set UPP strategy. I get that the truth hurt your feelings, but that doesn’t change it (not into your alternate facts)

        • Hurt my feelings? Your comments tend to be a source of entertainment for me Mr Hughes. Anyway, my point is, if the so-called NGO, EAG, dies after 31 years of existence, it probably won’t be because Mr. Smith left it after 3 years. By the way, notice there’s no focus on the individual. I’m not into running behind any political figure.

  3. THIS IS HILARIOUS….
The UPP has not shown any LEADERSHIP since HON BALDWIN SPENCER left the Disco.

Why would any thinking person seek to join the CHILDREN OF ISRAEL GOING AROUND IN CIRCLES FOR FORTY MORE YEARS. This person must be mad….

UPP should be going to a NEW DISCO because there rudder is malfunctioning and the navigator has never been in this kind of Brown water before.

Perhaps PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT FROM BARBUDA SHOULD THINK BIG AND TAKE THE FERRY TO ANTIGUA AND INFECT THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE LIKE NEVER BEFORE WITH THERE ZEST DETERMINATION and KNOW-HOW.

IT IS TIME FOR A PRIME MINISTER FROM BARBUDA. (Rastaman)

  4. He left his good job to jump on a sunken ship that is obviously going to take a long long long time to salvage the remains. What a joke..

  5. It is ones who speak well that use words to confound and deceive the masses with sweet sounding nothings! They love it, because they are being told to go to hell in such a fanciful way that they love it! Enough said!

  6. Doesn’t he understand UPP all mash up? The electorate kicked them to the curb. They are leaderless and have abandoned all pretense of being “progressive”. That was not a good decision.

  7. Upp will not be able to go anywhere with Harold Lovell as a leader. Vasky you wasted your time enrolling in a party that has no potential
