Director wants loitering after school to be a crime

8

Director of Education, Clare Browne today called for parents whose children are found loitering in St. John’s after school to be held criminally liable.

His appeal comes as student loitering in parts of the city is on the increase.

Mr. Browne says the ministry is aware of the trend and he is advocating for loitering to be made a criminal offence and parents to be held accountable.

  1. Seriously????? A CRIME???? Have we gone completely crazy??? Instead of creating venues for children to be engaged after school we punish them for being on The Street??? Spend The money you would spend in prosecuting in creating FREE after school programs

  2. CHILDREN- STUDENTS- LOITERERS- CHILDREN

    In a civilized world, humans should never display instincts
    associated with orangutans.

    If only for these reasons, ‘…criminalization’ sounds like
    ‘…Madness’ [Sir Gerald A. Watt KCN QC];

    (i) …Parents/guardians send children to school;
    (ii) …Principals admit them as students;
    (iii) …Given students’ lessons;
    (iv) …Principals dismissed them as students;

    Is it to be understood that once off the schools’ premises,
    the students automatically become ‘…Street Loiterers’ until they
    return home to be called children?’

    It begs this question ‘…Do Principals know students’ whereabouts
    when they are dismissed?

    Conversely, it begs a similar question, ‘…Do parents/guardians know
    the whereabouts of their children when they left school?

    Do Principals call to homes to say ‘…School is over, come and collect the
    students/children?

    By any stretch of the imagination, this would be a very tall order.
    Then who should be criminalized?

    It would make better sense than ‘…monkey nonsense’ to urge students
    to get home as quickly as possible.
