Customs roll out Christmas barrel initiative

The Antigua and Barbuda Customs & Excise Division is pleased to announce that all preparations are moving into place
for the Government’s annual Christmas Barrel Initiative.

Comptroller of Customs Mr. Raju Boddu, in making the announcement, revealed that the highly anticipated incentive will take effect from December 1 and will end on January 4.
Residents are being encouraged to make their purchases for the Christmas season and beyond so they can take advantage of the major incentives that traditionally come with the programme.
Under the initiative, residents are allowed to pack items of food, clothing and toiletries in their barrels or E-containers. Only one barrel/E-container is allowed per family.
Families will only have to pay the 10 percent Revenue Recovery Charge (RRC) on the value of the goods along with a $10 processing/handling fee.
The Antigua and Barbuda Customs & Excise Division continues to make the process as simple and seamless as possible. Like last year, barrel owners need only to get their documents to the Customs Tariff sections at the Deep Water Harbour or at the VC Bird International.
A Customs Officer will process the documents and a receipt will be issued by the cashier on duty upon payment. The receipt is to be taken to the relevant Barrel Release Points and upon examination barrels will be released to the beneficiaries.
Once again, Boddu explained, there is no need to use a broker, another incentive that has helped to ensure optimum efficiency in executing the process.
On behalf of the entire team at the Antigua and Barbuda Customs & Excise Division, Mr. Boddu is expressing joyous tidings for the season and a successful year in 2019.

  1. Barrel? How about a huge container?

Anyways, I encourage everybody to stock up on healthy organic food (no sugar). Antigua needs to change its diet to more vegetables and colorful fruits ASAP.

  2. Great news.

They usually roll out an industrial action plan for over time payment along with this initiative.

When will the industrial action plan be made public?

  3. For example, If the value of my goods in the barrel cost is US$400, then 10% percent of the goods is US$40.
    Converted into EC Dollars = US$40 X EC$2.70 = EC$108 plus EC$10 = EC$118.
