Costpro Supermarket staff cry out for help over harassment and short pay

23

The workers of the Costpro Supermarket say they are “very dissatisfied” with the treatment being received from management and are calling on the company to do better.

The staff, holding a number of entry-level positions, have written to Antigua News Room about their concerns.

“We have been working on holidays and instead of getting double as the Prime Minister suggested, we are getting time and a half,” their correspondence alleges.

In addition, the workers say they are being made to perform additional tasks for which they are not being compensated.

“The establishment has certain staff (the shelf packers) ordering goods and isn’t paying them any extra money,” the staff complain.

They say that “nothing is ever done” when complaints about short pay are brought to the attention of the management of the supermarket.

The workers are also calling on their superiors to do a better job as many times cashiers leave their station to find out prices of certain items that are not in the system.

“We are asking for the help of the Labor Department because we feel as if we are being misused,” the workers stated in their joint letter.

Among other concerns; the business is understaffed as cashiers sometimes have to double up as shelf packers.

“I am pleading for the supermarket to hire more staff and stop overusing the loyal workers that they have .. we are fed up and need justice.”

They are also alleging harassment from a male manager “who is hitting women on their butts asking for us to kiss him and hug him as a Manager he is very unprofessional and he has us feeling uncomfortable at our jobs can anyone help us.”

  1. I am a frequent male shopper and if this is how the management is dealing with these hard working cashiers and other staff at Cost Pro they need to be boycotted by the customers who shop their on a daily basis.. Them too wicked for not wanting to pay the workers double pay when they work on a public holiday.. and for the sexual harassment I have heard people talk about the management at cost pro passing his place with the female staff there. Sexual harassment on the workplace needs to be taken more serious in Antigua & Barbuda for both Male & Female victims.. Me know if any Manager or anyone over me touches me inappropriately Imma box dem the F@#* down. 😑

  2. Sorry to those workers espically the women who are being sexual harassed but to bad it is going to fall on deaf ears cause unless you are a male and at in a high poition their voices go unheard. SMDFH our society so wrapped. I will not be going back to Cos Pro to do.my shopping.

    • I agree! I was visiting antigua last year and had to speak up to one who was disrespectful to his staff in front of shoppers.

  3. Wow! Already?? Has it even been a year yet since this supermarket opened?? I can attest to the non-display of prices. It irks me to go to any place of business and see goods without prices. If I have to keep asking “How much is this”? Then maybe you don’t really want me to buy your item.

Thanks to Antigua Newsroom for bringing this to the public’s attention. I hope the Labour Department gets flooded with complaints from the employees and justice is meted out to all involved.

  4. Yea this worker is tell the truth on overworking, taking advantage of the staff and the short payment. He need for know that na go work in a Antigua.

  5. I hereby write to state that these allegations are not true. This article will be turned over to a lawyer this morning. The Payroll clerk is on medical leave and an error was made with the last holiday calculation. This was immediately corrected. There are cameras through out the property to prove that no employee has ever been harassed. We intend to take every legal action available to deal with this defamation.

    • Maxine you need to have a meeting with your staff cause obviously their dissatisfied with the way the company is treating them …these allegations are serious why would anyone put this article out if they weren’t seeking help ?? So help your staff instead of denying everything ..you are a woman for God sake

  6. It’s the same at another supermarket futher up by the gas station… But they put you on contract, cashiers are packing shelfs and cleaning bathrooms , they the management says it part of your job.

  7. Oops Supermarket on Old Parham Rd should also be investigated by the Health and Labour Department. A former worker mentioned how they overwork their employees. Social Security is not being paid but is deducted from salaries. Cashiers are sent to pack shelf as soon as there shifts begins. They are not being paid for any other tasks or overtime. Just yesterday I went in to shop and all three cashiers were packing shelves,,, to make it worse there was flies in a bagged bread and mold on a bun.The schedule is set for below 40 hrs….but one particular race works over 48 hrs. The supervisor on the floor is very unprofessional and rude. When ask to use their restroom, we are left with ..’we don’t have one for customers’….

    • I don’t believe everything people write on the internet, when you want to make comments like that you need to have proof.

  8. As far as working at other positions in the store that goes with the territory except food workers cleaning toilets which is a health matter in regards to cross contamination. If it is within the normal 40 hour week. Any time beyond that should be paid at the time and a half rate

  9. I’ve heard staff complaining about this supermarket, this is very distasteful… ..it’s funny because instead of looking into the matter and ask staff if his ever troubled them and call a meeting. this lady is saying it’s not true the other day I went to shop and the workers were saying they did not get paid for the holiday and that their always some payment issue .the labor department needs to look into this supermarket if their not treating staff right that must be fixed . The sexual harassment must be looked into . Maybe suspend the manager until investigation are completed .I feel sorry for the workers

    • The earliest recorded evidence of the production of soap-like materials dates back to around 2800 BC in ancient Babylon.
Maybe you should explore the use of modern technology, it might stop you spreading disease with your hands

  10. We as people have rights and laws to abide by… OK… Under paid and sexual harassment it a very big issue and or concern. I hope the relevant Pepe are seeing this and attend to the matter asap… Like the manager harassing you that is wrong on alot of different levels. That is a discrimination for women… Even younger one growing up, it is not a good image being painted in society. Not cool, its not ok. When one works he/she expects to be paid accordingly. C’mon we have laws.

  11. Become unionized! That is the solution these problems. All staff need to organize and make contact with one of the two Trade Unions and have all these matters discussed with the union. I am a little skeptical when employees comes directly to the public because there are always two sides to these issues. However, it’s the right of all employees to become unionized and as such, the employees should be talking to the Union and let the union fight for their cause.
