Clarevue Protest To Continue

Workers at Clarevue say they will continue their protest action until immediate steps are taken to improve the conditions for residents and staff.

The island’s lone mental hospital has been in a deplorable condition for years but staff members say the infrastructure has crumbled even further.

According to them, it is at a point that can no longer be tolerated and so their protest action by way of work stoppage will continue for a fifth day on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Works led a visit to the facility on Tuesday to get yet another look at the well-known problems the institution faces.

Antigua and Barbuda Public Service Association General Secretary Sandra Williams accompanied officials on the visit.

He says a report is expected to be submitted to the minister who was absent.

“Because the workers came back to work everything stopped,” Williams said, making reference to past industrial action.

She said bathrooms have no light and the same fridge which stores urine samples must also be used to store meals for the employees.

  1. If the government have no monies to repair these facilities, the politicians in office should/can donate some of their loot from the Statutory Corporations to refurbish/renovate these institutions namely; Clarevue and Fiennes Institute. Give back to community ia the least they can do.

  2. $350,000 is immaterial he said. This place could do well with that money. In all my life in Antigua, I’ve never seen this level of disregard for the people. Time is longer than rope though.

  3. Kudos to them. Pray they get the needed attention as Fiennes.
It would appear like the people in government would have accumulated so much wealth that neither they nor any of their families will ever have need for such place so they don’t care.
Then again, if money is the problem, why not do the right thing and create a special fund for government’s buildings upkeep, with the “finder’s fees”, instead of “… enrichment”?
Remember, God knows sees and everything .
