Carnival minister says judging needs to be looked at

National Festivals Minister Daryl Matthew says the controversy over judging certain carnival shows may have led patrons to downgrade the entire summer festival.

Matthew said the judging was among “sour points” based on the perception that the judges results did not match what the public expected.

While he did not specify a competition, many people have said that the 2018 jumpy monarch competition was not properly judged.

“That is an area that we need to look at and revisit and this is not to cast aspersions on the judges but I just think that the public needs to have the confidence that the adjudicators really see the same thing they see.”

The minister added that members of the public must also understand the criteria for judging.

“And there needs to be some public education,” he said.

But the minister said changes to the line up of carnival worked and will be continued in the future.

  1. With all due respect Mr Minister I think you are trying to pacify the masses with that statement instead of highlighting that CRITERIA was followed. Many people are up in arms not realising it WAS NOT a show or a popularity contest. It was a COMPETITION based on a CRITERIA, a CRITERIA I may add that included melody, harmony, lyrical content and not just what you saw on the stage. Notice the most senior artistes did basics in semis as well and advanced, why? Because they STUDIED and UNDERSTOOD the CRITERIA and SATISFIED it. As king Onyan sang so eloquently in a song penned by Dr Sir Prince Ramsey ” it’s foolishness they chatting they don’t study the criteria for juding, don’t blame me” … So don’t encourage the nation in its ignorance about poor judging. Even the groovy king I had difficulty understanding except for his add-on verse at the end anything he uttered before that was jumbled but he won right?

  2. @ give me an aspirin if u did not understand our local dialect then u have no say about the groovy king just say u dont understand dialect as There was nothing jumbled in his performance lol

  3. The minister added that members of the public must also understand the criteria for judging…….sometimes i believe they thing people dumb…..the judging was flawed the winner of the competition went to the wrong person….please bring the judges from overseas…

  4. Not at all encouraging when the man in charge of Carnival can question the opinion and decisions of the judges. In my opinion, Carnival was a failure and the entire Festival Commission needs to be retired.
