For the third time in as many months the Ministry of Works is promising to repair the General Post Office.

This follows the latest protest action by the staff there this week.

The infrastructure has been crumbling for years, jeopardizing the health of postal workers.

The workers protested in November and December 2018 and again January 2019.

Each time, officials promised to resolve the problem.

The industrial action arose from the poor working conditions to include a leaking roof and the deterioration of the structural elements (i.e. slab, beams and columns).

In a news release today, the ministry said it has engaged the services of a contractor to commence work on the building on Monday 7th January, 2019.

It said the work to be done will include the above mentioned along with general upgrades, to include the services.  It was discussed that minor works could be undertaken during the afternoon period, while the major work is executed following the relocation of staff.

The Ministry of Works says it will continue its efforts to identify a suitable space for the operations of the General Post Office, and to ensure that the works are completed soonest.

“We would like to assure the general public that every effort is being made to minimize the inconvenience,” the statement said.

  1. 10 000 x $25 = $250,000
A minimum fee at the Unity Concert can raise sufficient funds to fix the Post Office.
