All political parties declare Campaign Financing Statement

Political parties in Antigua and Barbuda have escaped having to pay a penalty to the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC).

That is because, according to ABEC, all registered political parties have sent in their campaign financing reports.

Those parties include the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), the United Progressive Party (UPP), the Barbuda Peoples Movement (BPM), the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), the Antigua Barbuda True Labour Party and the Go Green for Life Party.

As part of the requirement, parties are required to file a statement to the Electoral Commission showing contributions made by individuals and entities six (6) weeks after an election.

That is in accordance to Section 43 (3 and 6) of the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act #17 of 2001.

The Commission’s secretary told ZDK News that independent candidates are not required to declare their finances.

The Commission also said it was prepared to enforce the section which states that, “any political party who fails to comply with the provisions of the Act shall be charged the sum of EC $2000 per day for each day of not filing the said statement.”
