The Ministry of Education, taking into consideration the discomfort of the high temperature climate, will undertake a project to place air conditioning units (AC) in schools across Antigua and Barbuda.

Education Minister Michael Browne said all the schools will have AC units installed.

Browne said those deemed to be the hottest will be equipped with AC units or ceiling fans as quickly as possible.

He noted that this initiative is a must because children cannot learn properly in an uncomfortable environment.

The education minister recounted visiting the science block at the Antigua Girls High School (AGHS) where he observed the science teacher sweating “bullets” and the students were also perspiring.

“We are moving to try and create air conditioning in as many classrooms across Antigua and Barbuda. Well, we are waiting for some of the units now but most of the departments (at the Sir Novelle Richards Academy) are air conditioned and we are looking at creating AC units at most of our schools across Antigua and Barbuda, not because it’s a want, but it’s a need.

It is the aim of the education ministry of have air conditioning units set up in all primary and secondary schools; however, the minister could not say which schools will be first. Discussions would first have to be held with the technicians.

  1. Pickyneerga deez days too pwile. Soon they will want AC in their bedrooms. Anyway it’s a good idea for those places that really NEED it.

  2. this is the most piece meal, ad hoc, makeshift , politically expedient government i ever see after 50 years is only now the schools need AC??????? No holistic or coherent planning tarl tarl. this trial and error governance got to stop
btw does novelle richards school have any AC?

  3. I can see the need for students and teachers to be comfortable in the classroom, but the first thing that popped into my mind was whether the government twill recall not only the initial const for tthe project, but the proper maintenance. I’m guessing this will also increase the amount on education levy.

All I ask is that this is planned properly, and all measures are taken to protect the units from damage and misuse.

  4. Please take a look at the Pares Secondary as it is in dire need of some attention. We have been ignored for years upon years and the school is falling apart. Missing windows, no doors, ugly dirty walls, no auditorium or eating area. Please give us some assistance Mr. Minister.

    Thank you.
