The Antigua Commercial Bank today announced Joanna Charles as its new General Manager, effective October 1, 2018.
The bank says Charles is an accomplished career banker, who brings over 28 years of extensive regional banking industry experience to Antigua Commercial Bank.
In her most recent role, she held the position of Deputy Managing Director of Bank of Saint Lucia Ltd., and previously served as the General Manager of Bank of Antigua, during a critical period, in which that institution successfully transitioned, to the Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank.
Ms. Charles is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB) UK, who also holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Banking & Financial Services from the University of Manchester and an MBA (Finance) from the Manchester Business School.

This story disappoints me once again. For the thousand times. Why is it we cannot find an Antiguan with the same or even higher education to fill this position. I really have not seen it advertised here in the country. And again the Board members are my friends. And as a shareholder I feel powerless. We have many Antiguans that can run this bank. I know this young lady and know she will do a good job, technically. But banks these days need to be run not just by technocrats but by people persons. I have my monies stacked with mote than one bank, but I can tell you there are some banks I want to scrap a long time, because the manager is very impersonal. He lacks the NYC Skills. he is only into his figures. That is for the accountant. You know one of the reasons why Sandals is a success. It’s because the manager is not involved in the finance part. he has to make sure the customers are satisfied with their stay at the hotel. So too I believe managers of banks needs to be ensure that customers are satisfied with the service of the bank. When last has a bank manager stand at the door and welcome his customer and thanked them for having their account at the bank. The tellers don’t care. They just do what is requested from them. handle cash transactions. You are lucky if they wish you a good day. No matter how many persons are in the line they will not open another teller and on average you would be in the bank for one hour or more. And they close on time. No overtime in there.
Lady I have nothing against you, but Antiguans deserve to be taking charge of certain position in their own country. It cannot be that we have to migrate in order to elevated to these positions. This is simple not right. And my board members should come better than that.
The GM before was not a female? Just checked and it was Barbara Hume. Yes she is from Jamaica. Brethren as far as selection let me have the best from our region. I don’t know many Antiguan’s sitting and waiting for such. I know a very qualified young lady quit some years ago when they hired Hume, but I happen to think we need to give those persons we put on the board the benefit of doubt that they are simply choosing the person they deem best. My concern is why are they hiring a new GM after a small stint of 3 years by Barbara Hume?
I think Denise did a fine job running the bank even though Gladstone was the GM. We have enough qualified people here tenman believe me.

I can’t believe that in this day and age Antiguans are still as insular as this person “from the sidelines” above who wrote this long epistle . Sir you should welcome a qualified banker to save this bank instead of being so idiotic. I could say the same for CIBC in St Lucia who has an Antiguan female as G M and who is doing a horrible job especially with staff morale. She has heralded the departure of many good St Lucian staff through bullying tatics and yet she prevails. I warn you sir to leave this young lady to do her job and stop this nationalistic nonsense. We are now the OECS and free movement of people prevails.
