The government says it will ask businesses to install wastewater plants to help control the bad smell in parts of the city.
The decision was made yesterday as the Cabinet agreed that it will intensify the effort to remove wastewater from the gutters of commercial St. John’s.
“Merely flushing the gutters daily is insufficient; new wastewater is added every hour after the businesses open in the morning,” a brief statement emanating from Cabinet notes indicated.
“The Cabinet agreed that it will have every business-place install an inexpensive wastewater plant that will remove the substances that can cause the gutters in St. John’s to smell,” it added.
It is expected that more than 750,000 cruise tourists will arrive Antigua in the 2018/2019 tourism season.
“Everything must be done to make the City more attractive,” the Cabinet agreed.
It promised that more details will follow in the weeks ahead.

Why put a bandage on this great cut? The city is in great need of a central sewage system. We need to do proper research and have one built and installed to service Saint John’s city. Then we move out into the environs and do the same. It’s common sense.
And don’t tell me we don’t have the K money when we seem to be placing monies in projects that are not priority
To place a central sewer system in St. John’s is not as easy as it looks. It perhaps is impossible. We cannot even have patient for the roadwork that is presently underway. If we have to do a central sewage system we need to dig up the entire town. That would be chaos for months if not years to come. This solution may be a bad-aid on the problem but it is better then doing nothing in the meantime. Perhaps we should abandon St. John’s City and Start a new well thought off City on Friars Hill Road. Friars Hill Road should have a wide enough side walk that will allow you to walk from one shopping center to the other.And when the traffic is moved we can go back and work on St. John’s. It would be just like Puerto Rico building the new San Juan City while the old San Juan is still there.
Sooner or later nature will take care of St John’s with a big earthquake, fire, and tsunami or cat 5 or 6 hurricane. Then there is sea level rise.
Many businesses have already abandoned St John’s because of the traffic congestion and parking problem not to mention the stink.
The money gone to pay off the bad debt for Deluxe, 8 million dollars and it nah worth half a dat.
It’s time to get that stink out of the city.
There is an odour around the whole country. Let’s get rid of the government!!!!!
