A court dedicated to hearing sexual offences opens

Officials are promising faster hearing and more efficient administration of sexual offence cases with the opening of a new sexual offences court here.

The court was inaugurated on Monday, with High Court judge Iain Morley saying, “cases will be finished ideally 18 months of charging a defendant.”

He said, “gone are the days of cases often taking four years or more.”

According to the Directorate of Gender Affairs, the Sexual Offences Model Court or SOMC is set of specialized court procedures designed to improve the handling of sexual offence cases.

These features include quicker resolution of cases through tighter pre-trial management, fast-tracking for sexual offence cases, assigning sexual offence matters only to court administrators, police, and prosecutors with specialized training.

The use of video conferencing technology to allow vulnerable complainants to give testimony from a remote location to reduce re-traumatisation, a special waiting room for complainants within the High Court, and improved survivor support services coordinated through the Support And Referral Centre and Family and Social Services Division.

The Court was established through the Canadian-funded Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening (JURIST) Project, and implemented through the Caribbean Court of Justice CCJ.

      • Alex is like cancer. Stay away from toxic people like that. Negativity kills. Sorry for the actual people who have to interact with him/her in real life. A real sourpuss with a vienna sausage

    • Guy how are we not paying for it? Who paying the operating expenses? Yep, the government of A&B. My understanding is the grant related to funds in helping to set it up, not to keep it operating
