New UWI Chancellor Dodridge Miller Calls for Greater Autonomy and Global Thinking at Five Islands Graduation Ceremony

The Most Hon. Dodridge Miller, newly appointed Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), made a resounding call for greater autonomy and a strengthened presence within the Eastern Caribbean during his remarks at the UWI Five Islands Campus graduation ceremony in Antigua. Speaking to the graduating class of 2024, Miller highlighted the campus’s growth since its inception and urged graduates to embrace global perspectives in their future endeavors.

Chancellor Miller, a former corporate executive with over 30 years of experience across the Caribbean, emphasized the importance of autonomy for institutions like UWI, stating, “Greater autonomy and a stronger presence in the Eastern Caribbean were critical in the corporate world, and they are equally important for an institution shaping the minds of the Caribbean’s future leaders.”

The Five Islands Campus, which opened in 2019, has rapidly expanded, growing from just 200 students to over 1,000 today. Miller praised the campus for its role in expanding access to higher education throughout the region, particularly in the Eastern Caribbean.

“The class of 2024 should be proud of this remarkable milestone,” Miller noted, commending the graduates for their perseverance, especially in light of the challenges posed by the global health crisis. “Your presence here today speaks volumes about your resilience.”

In his address, Miller encouraged the graduates to adopt a broad, global perspective as they embark on their professional journeys. He shared a thought-provoking example of global interconnectedness, illustrating how even the most everyday activities are shaped by global influences. From cars assembled in multiple countries to smartphones designed and produced across continents, Miller highlighted the importance of viewing the world through a global lens, while also acting locally.

“Think global, act local is not just a saying—it’s a necessity in today’s interconnected world,” Miller remarked. “As graduates of UWI, you are part of a global community, and the knowledge you’ve gained here will help you navigate both local and global challenges with confidence.”

Miller also took the opportunity to celebrate the rich legacy of UWI, referencing the introduction of new academic regalia that reflects the Caribbean identity, moving away from colonial ties. “This is a moment to stand tall in your achievements and let your success light the way for future generations.”

As the ceremony concluded, Miller assured the graduates that their journey of growth does not end with the graduation ceremony. “UWI is committed to supporting you through every phase of your evolution,” he affirmed. “Carry forward the spirit of resilience and innovation, and know that we look forward to witnessing your future success.”

The UWI Five Islands Campus continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the academic and professional future of students across the Eastern Caribbean, and Miller’s speech reinforced the institution’s commitment to both regional growth and global thinking.
