Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government is making major strides in healthcare, announcing the conversion of the former Jehovah’s Witness headquarters into a modern mental health facility valued at $12 million and the nearing completion of a state-of-the-art Renal Centre.
In his Independence Day address, Browne said the new Mental Health Facility will be fully retrofitted, expanded, and equipped to international standards, providing a humane and dignified environment for people living with mental health conditions.
“This facility will be converted into a modern Mental Health Facility,” Browne said. “It will be adequately staffed, creating a humane and dignified environment for those among us living with mental health conditions.”
The Prime Minister said the investment underscores his administration’s commitment to compassion and inclusion. “Our goal is to integrate every citizen into productive and fulfilling lives,” he said. “No one in our society should be ostracized or cast out.”
Browne also highlighted progress on the new Renal Centre, which he said is nearing completion. The facility will expand dialysis capacity and introduce routine kidney transplants and other specialized renal care services.
“The new Renal Centre will bring expanded dialysis capacity and facilities for routine kidney transplants and other specialized renal care,” Browne said. “It will be a centre of excellence, accessible and equipped to global standards.”
He added that community clinics in Liberta, Falmouth, and Bolans have already been rebuilt and modernized, with work on the All Saints Clinic set to begin shortly.
“These investments in healthcare are investments in the human spirit and human development,” Browne said. “They affirm that every life has worth, that every illness deserves care, and that in Antigua and Barbuda, compassion is as important as cure.”

The rapid increase in alcoholism, drug abuse and poor dietary habits at earlier stages of life will definitely keep this center busy.
Sounds like only the Harney’s the PM has strong for. He called his name several times on his radio concerning the Vechicle scandal. A few days later he announced that Harney motors repaired 10 million dollars. What about the other dealers and civil servants that benefited.
Pm also spoke about this renal center and that the contractor C&S had overcharged by at least 6 million dollars. Who signed this contract with these people. Was this contract awarded by the tenders board and who are the other contractors that were involved in the tendering process. At least you said it was over 15 million dollars.
To stamp out corruption the tenders board must play an important role.
