New Litter Bins Installed In St. John’s

Efforts by the Government to crack down on litter and illegal dumping in the city is ongoing.

The Ministry of the Environment on Sunday installed over 80 garbage bins in and around the city.

According to Environmental Minister Molwyn Joseph, the traditional plastic drums as garbage bins became an eyesore, especially for visitors.

“Before we had plastic drums that were used as litter bins. Just imagine you come off the ships and you see a plastic drum that is beaten up, it looks dirty it just doesn’t fit in the aesthetics of what we want to see in the city.”

The new bins are environmentally friendly and come with two sections, one for recycling materials while the other for general waste.

Recyclable waste is items such as plastics, papers, and glass and for the general waste items that are degradable.

The cabinet recently made provision for the hiring of 15 new litter wardens.

Parliament recently passed the Environment Protect and Management Act 2019.

The new law seeks to prevent persons from dumping garbage illegally throughout the length and breadth of Antigua and Barbuda. The reporter can be compensated a percentage of the fine for their information.

  1. This is great news and I like the look of these new trash bins. Hopefully Antigua will get cleaner and we will continue this progress of making our country modern, clean and safe. Thank you to the government for doing this, finally a government that is making day-to-day life cleaner and more pleasant for our citizens.

  2. Well done. This is the type of news I like to hear. This is PROGRESS. BIG UP Minister Joseph. Blessings

  3. Molwyn Joseph really busy in his Ministry. Is he trying to outdo former Health Minister Wilmoth Daniel? Anyway, loving the look of the new bins. I really hope for the best results.

  4. Wilmoth Daniel never worked. It is very easy to out do Wilmoth Daniel.Great INITIATIVE Mr. Joseph.

    • What do you mean he NEVER worked? He was once in charge of healthcare in this country. I think he was in charge of Public Works at one point too. Obviously he is talented or he would not have been ENTRUSTED with 2 ministries.

  5. So, is the recycling just for show? Where is the recycled garbage going? Straight to Cooks with the rest of the garbage.
