Minister Rawdon Turner Unveils Plans to Transform Woods Pond Market

Urban Transformation Minister Rawdon Turner has revealed detailed plans to upgrade the Woods Pond market area, announcing the launch of a Vendor Intervention Project aimed at modernising the site where fruit and vegetable vendors have operated for decades.

In a public statement accompanied by concept drawings, Turner described the initiative as a long-overdue investment in both infrastructure and the livelihoods of vendors who form part of Antigua and Barbuda’s food supply chain.

“We’re building with vendors in mind — and with community at heart,” Turner said, noting that the current state of Woods Pond lacks the structure and cleanliness the area deserves.

The concept images show a clean, organised layout with designated vending spaces, covered stalls, and improved sanitation facilities. Turner said the goal is not just to beautify the space but to create a more functional and supportive environment for daily commerce.

“This upgrade is about supporting the people who feed our nation, preserving livelihoods, and encouraging healthy, local eating,” he added.

Turner invited public feedback as the project moves forward, describing it as a collaborative effort to enhance the quality of urban spaces across the country.

Further details regarding the timeline and construction phases are expected in upcoming announcements.

  1. I still think the vendors need to be removed from there. They cause lots of traffic obstruction. Instead of people parking in the parking lot and walking up to the vendors they stop right infront of the shacks to buy their produce. It is a traffice hazard. Unless Mr. Turner will bring the road more to the inside so that the traffice can keep flowing.

  2. have clauses in contract that they will HAVE to keep the place PRISTINE. Nearga pikney too damn narcy sometimes…

  3. .@ So now they wanna keep using pallets in 21 century, when someone give them the opportunity to grow they don’t want to pay any fee for getting a new spot? Is better keep using Pallet? For real?

  4. This will not solve the main problem, traffic congestion . People pull up in-front of these vendors and cause unnecessary traffic jams, it will not be policed and the car park is always full during the week

  5. Don’t have to move them- how about enforcing traffic laws- if someone is shopping at the Mall- park in the huge parking area at Woods Mall- no one should be allowed to park on any road and shop- which seems to be the norm here. Isn’t that a traffic offense called obstruction of traffic. All we need are laws to be put in place and enforced.

  6. As I said the meeting with turner is going to be pernicious to the entrepreneurship of these woods vendors, they are not going to be independent and make any monies from there business, the government will be collecting the monies in rent of these shack. Any how the poorer people get creative and try to develop themselves the culture of colonialism is to bring into a dependent state.
But I am not talking without solutions, there need to be a business set up for leasing or selling of mobile karts for vending in food and clothing with bathroom facility and generator power and basic types without , some are mounted on tricycle bike and vans and bicycle type and pushing type, stainless steel body for presentable looks, have you been into Manhattan new York and see the hot dogs vendors presentation? Just need a functioning Antigua development bank, the CIP monies should be lodge there instead a on Caribbean union bank to help out Stuart. And people could look finance for business.
