Prominent members of Parliament, including Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph, and Education Minister Daryll Matthew, have proposed the establishment of a monument to honor the distinguished contributions of Sir Gerald, the outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The proposal, made during a session of heartfelt tributes, underscores the impact of Sir Gerald’s decades-long service to Antigua and Barbuda.
Prime Minister Browne highlighted Sir Gerald’s unmatched contributions to the nation and the parliamentary system, calling for a tangible recognition of his legacy.
“We must find a way to honor Sir Gerald’s extraordinary service. His contributions deserve to be enshrined in the consciousness of our people,” Browne said. “A monument or some form of physical artifact would serve as a lasting testament to his work and inspire future generations.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that Sir Gerald’s service, which spans over six decades, has left an indelible mark on the country’s democratic and legal institutions.
Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph echoed these sentiments, advocating for a broader culture of recognizing national icons through physical monuments and commemorations.
“In many developed countries, the contributions of great men and women are immortalized in statues and landmarks,” Sir Molwyn said. “We must do better in Antigua and Barbuda to honor those whose shoulders we stand on, and Sir Gerald is a prime example.”
He pointed to Sir Gerald’s pivotal role in parliamentary reform and his fearless advocacy for democratic principles as reasons for creating a lasting tribute.
Education Minister Daryll Matthew supported the call for a monument, describing it as a fitting way to celebrate Sir Gerald’s exemplary service.
“Sir Gerald’s legacy deserves more than just words of tribute,” Matthew said. “A monument would symbolize our gratitude and ensure that his achievements are remembered by generations to come.”
While no specifics have been outlined, the Prime Minister assured Parliament that discussions within the Cabinet would explore ways to bring the proposal to fruition. Options could include naming a building, erecting a statue, or dedicating a public space to Sir Gerald.

Do the public space and fix it up nice with benches, not because I particularly care about Sir Gerald but because we need more dedicated spaces like parks in Antigua for the public to sit, enjoy fresh air and relax. Also do not permit any shanty town style vending in the area when it is done, we have enough ghettoised spaces in this country as it is.
