St. George MP Algernon “Serpent” Watts addressed rumors of internal division within the United Progressive Party (UPP) during a political rally Thursday night, confronting speculation about his attendance with humor and a call for unity.
“There was a bet going on in a certain radio station today, I was told,” Watts said to the crowd.
“And the bet was whether I’d be here tonight. Well, here I am!” he exclaimed, making clear his presence despite questions about his loyalty to the party’s leadership.
Watts says many of whom who had approached him earlier in the evening about his stance with the party.
He recounted a moment when several supporters took photos with him, a gesture he interpreted as a sign of unity. “We are one!”
Watts declared, echoing a phrase that had been repeated by other speakers throughout the rally. He playfully added that they hadn’t quite said it right, quipping, “Me nah move,” as a signal of his unyielding stance.
The MP shifted to address the economic challenges facing the community, noting the increasing difficulty of making ends meet.
“The weight of us just trying to survive or simply put food on the table is heavier than ever,” he said, acknowledging the hardships his constituents face.
Watts reaffirmed his commitment to his district and the UPP, stating, “We are standing in the gap for you. We are fighting with you. We are fighting for you.”
Watts’s speech came as some party members have reportedly expressed discontent with the current leadership, but the MP made it clear he remains committed to the UPP and to representing St. George.
