MP Simon: Government’s $75,000 Budget for Barbuda Carnival is Inadequate and Vindictive

The government’s recently approved budget of a mere EC$75,000 for Barbuda Carnival demonstrates, once again, that Gaston Browne has no genuine commitment to the cultural development and economic empowerment of our nation.

Staging a cultural festival requires adequate funding for everything from decorations to paying the artistes and service providers on time. For many years, the Gaston-led government has deprived the Barbuda Council of funding to which it is entitled.

This would have made it more challenging for the Council to meet the costs required to stage a high quality and economically impactful event.

MP Simon states, “This government has raised taxes and imposed other measures, to rake in new revenue hand-over-fist. So why are they under-funding Barbuda Carnival in this shameless way? This appears to be a form of vindictive payback, to frustrate Barbudans who have been defending their land ownership and way of life.”

He further observes, “Barbuda Carnival should be an opportunity to ensure Barbudans and Antiguans receive robust economic benefits from a properly funded and strongly marketed festival, which enjoys the highest possible participation from locals and stay-over tourists alike. Instead of ensuring that this yearly event grows to become a regional attraction, the government’s actions threaten to sabotage its development.”

“$75,000 is often the cost of a single fete. I call on Gaston Browne and his government to reconsider their decision and come up with a budget that makes sense. Barbuda Carnival has the the potential, if properly supported, to be a major success with strong economic benefits to our twin island state, and to Barbudans in particular.”, Simon concludes.

  1. Watch the foolish virgin continue to chat rubbish. Barbuda has a population of about 1500 persons (mostly children). 75K equates to 50.00 per person. This represents a 50 percent increase based on what they got in 2018. Antigua carnival budget is 4 million which equates to about 40.50 per person. Barbuda counsel needs to actually work for the money they get and pursue Corporate sponsorship.

    • The event is one that is put on by the nation/community. It would not hurt the government to invest more in such investment by marketing it internationally to attract tourist to bring in foreign revenue.

This also could encourage foreign and local business sponsorship for events like these. Frankly speaking, the government need to invest more in events like these strategically to increase national benefits of such events.

It is time events and endeavors of national and international importance is focused on in a significant way that benefits twofold can be returned. It is about thinking big and longterm.

Comparing one to the other will never push anyone or anything to be the best they or it can be.

But I understand, I think way different than most.

      • @my way of helping…. I saw a post by you the other day, indicating that you would have sponsored a Carnival Queen, if you had known sponsorship was being sought. You even expressed a romantic interest in one of the very fine ladies.

Here we are now with the Barbuda Caribana. Let’s assume the amount the government has allotted to Barbuda Caribana is not enough. Why don’t you sponsor an event for the Caribana?

Put your money where your mouth is. Anything less will demonstrate that you are a big time liar.

        • @Wash an Basin, your logic makes no sense. I am interested in what I AM INTERESTED IN. Not what you tell me to be interested in.

Why don’t you donate to Barbuda and maybe I would develop some interest in donating to an area I am currently not interested in donating too. I will be awaiting your actions on yours on doing what you strongly recommend I do.

          Waiting on you tenman

      • @my way of helping:
Do you know if they have room stock to handle an international crowd of any great magnitude? What about air and sea transportation to maneuver passengers across the island? The new airport is a pushback by the detractors of the administration. Is there sufficient food vendors to handle a large crowd? It sounds great in theory, but all the factors must be weighed when discussing these matters. All of its 1500 residents will not even be attending the events for Caribana.

        • @Dave Ray, it is why my post strongly recommended the government invest in ways that will make the destination better suited and include the locals when doing so.

It is possible in theory and practically. It is the government’s duty to expand, and support that like that local/island festivity and see where it can best increase the productivity.

      • @My Way it comes down to ROI. CARIBANA has been in place for more than 20 years. I find it telling that the opposition would lambast the government for investing 300K in the One nation concert, yet argue they should invest more in Caribana. In case you don’t get it, the attendance for One nation sees more than 10K persons. We would be lucky if Caribana shows even 1K persons. Guy its private sector like the MP Walkers gas station, Barbuda Express, the hotels there who need to seriously contribute to this exercise

    • @ tenman
You seem to be a paradox: the foolish virgin made u Gaston, Gerald Watt and all the other minions eat excreta. Surprised you would actually remind us of your ill fated attempt to try and fool the masses.
If I were you I would go into a crab hole you ‘foolish virgin’, lol

    • Antigua will never become unstuck from its financial woes until government of whichever pollical stripe realizes that it has no business in handing out financial gifts for this annual event. The Economic Powerhouse cannot provide toilet rolls for its patients at its sole hospital, cannot pay its pay its pensioners on time at the best of times, cannot pay monies due to civil servants for their back pay, I could go on, but hey presto, Carnival comes around and government is right on hand to dole out some money for the annual frolic. When will they ever learn to encourage entrepreneurs to show some private enterprise and organize the annual jump-up? Government should keep its snout out of this trough. It’s government this and government that at the drop of the carnival hat. Of course what they offer is never enough, why should it be? The complaints will come later that performers have not been paid and the rest of it. Government should keep out of the running of this annual fest and let private individuals with some enterprise take the risk and gain the reward and stay clear. The only input government should have is providing law enforcement in the interest of law and order, full stop.

      • @oversee, I am not into those events but it is for the preservation of culture, celebration of national achievements (abolishing slavery celebration, at least I think for the Antigua’s own), and it can be used, I am confident if this, to bring in more revenue the islands spend on the event, if such spending is done strategically. I strongly believe it. It is a festival and celebration.

        • @my way of helping.
Are you aware how the freed slaves celebrated their freedom in 1834? They did so in a dignified yet joyous way. No semi nudity or obscenity or near pornographic public displays. I mention this because I feel strongly that a majority of the revellers have little or no idea what they are celebrating. Sure enough it is the maint part of our culture which has sadly become debased over the years. I will repeat: no government of any political stripe should get involved in what should be a private entrepreneurnship. I remember growing up in the countryside when Easter or Whit Monday festIve events were organised by local villagers. Of course it was very basic but wholesome. What the heck has government got to do by poking its nose in it? Forever Broke should be the motto of Antigua and Barbuda.

    • @Tenman. Stop trying to look so “smart”. If the subvention to Antigua was so adequate, people would not be owed since 2019. And,before you cry propaganda, I also am owed since 2019 and before. Point is, that amount is woefully inadequate. Far less than what is paid to the Jamaicans for the ridiculous “One nation” crap. See the irony?

    • And the award for idiatt’s corner this week goes to the perfect @ Bridge 👌🏽

      PERFECTION PERSONIFIED!

Are you a priest? Must be …

      • shut up! i certainly stuck to my age group and not here there and everywhere! I’m a resident with class and integrity.

    • @ Bridge
Again and I will repeat myself. One of the reasons that I will never support the ABLP is that of their hypocrisy- the things they accuse the opposition of is worse than what they do BUT they still do it!
Is anybody more ‘womaniser’ than GB, Cutie, Chet etc- I know of so many stories.
JUST take the beam out of your eyes first before taking the plank out of others.
Shuggy is dam well right. Gaston is a vindictive SOB.

      • @ sob, ABLP supporters are something else, aren’t they?

I thoroughly enjoy pulling up the ignorant, the illiterate and the NESCIENT.

I get a real buzz out of it, because there is so many of these BENIGHTED ABLP acolytes around.

        I WANT MORE, I WANT MORE 😁

  2. How much can the good St. Mary’s South MP offer to Barbuda’s Caribana. Be has a lot of investors at his disposal.
The trivial battles that these mentally low-budget elected citizens start is disingenuously disappointing.
    Now, what is that?

  4. Can one of you UPP trolls let us know what will be a reasonable budget. One would have expected Shuggy to put forward a reasonable figure in defence of his rhetoric but as expected statements are made void of any substance to defend but they have the ears of an opposition so their rhetoric still has an audience. Trolls I await you.

    • Yes, gladly @ . for brains.

      BRIXTONIAN NEVER HIDES 😉

The Most Honourable Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon is absolutely correct that this measly sum is derisory and should be QUADRUPLED immediately.

Let’s be frank with one another @ . for brains.

Gaston Browne knows that Barbudan’s will never vote for him, so he’s being VINDICTIVE, VENGEFUL and RANCOROUS – that’s how he rolls.

And as we are being frank with each other boss, and with your hand on heart, do you believe that if any of the ABLP constituencies, where they had a thumping majority wins, that extra funding would have been curtailed or denied?

BWOI, THE CONSTITUENTS OF ALL SAINTS BETTER NOT ASK GASSSSSTON FOR ANY TYPE AH FUNDING – THEY WON’T SEE A PENNY CENT!

Next question? Mi ready … 🤜🏽🤛🏽

    • @. How about find out how much UPP gave during their time and double that. They spend all their time trying to upstage UPP so now is their chance to do so for a good cause.

  5. It is always evident whenever Mr. Lunacy makes a threat, while brandishing his whip. They are just there to clean the mop instead of mopping. Any insignificant person who even pretends to be aligned with the UPP, can walk right into the ALP and be thrust into the Senate, while these Goons keep displaying how devoid they are of value.

  6. Just another indication of how badminded Gaston Browne is. Tinman, Dave Ray, . or any of you clowns, nothing this incompetent, corrupt hoodlum can ever do wrong.
The Barbudans are stalling his attempts to sell their lands and this is throwing a monkey wrench in the DAWG’S plans, so like the juvenile he is, this is how he retaliates. His only claim to accomplishment, PLH, is in a spot of bother. He borrowed from them(we know of 12 million, Lord knows how much more)
What, you jokers forgot his words about Molly cuddling the Barbudans?
His day will come. Kama demands it.

  7. I have no clue why people with ABLP thinks demanding their government to do more means you are a detractor. I guess to please the government citizens must hereby never ever push any political party to progress, innovate, maximize, and advance.

If folks were intelligent enough, they would realize this is a sign of? Place your answer here.
