This oversight has reportedly left law enforcement officers without a proper facility to carry out their duties, raising serious questions about the government’s commitment to public safety.

The Bolans Police Station had been undergoing reconstruction before the October 24 by-election in St. Mary’s South, with efforts to enhance its facilities for improved law enforcement capabilities.

However, since the victory of the United Progressive Party (UPP), progress on the reconstruction appears to have stalled, mirroring a broader trend of civil works stagnation within the constituency.

Hon. Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon expressed his disappointment, stating, “St. Mary’s South deserves better. At a time when crime is on the rise, this is unacceptable!”

The failure to provide a functional police station for the officers, especially amid increasing concerns about crime rates, has raised eyebrows and garnered significant public attention.

The People’s Parliament, scheduled for tomorrow, is expected to be a platform where Hon. Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon will address various constituency matters, shedding light on the challenges faced by St. Mary’s South.

The MP has indicated that he will discuss the implications of the government’s failure to pay the rent for the Bolans Police Station and how it impacts the safety and security of the community.

Source- Real News Antigua: Officers at the Bolans Police Station – who had been relocated to a space at the entrance of the Jolly Harbour compound – have been booted out of their rented facility, sources allege to REAL News.

Reports claim the Browne Administration has failed to pay the rent for the office suite that officers had been occupying since renovation of their station began last year.

This embarrassing development reportedly has left the law- enforcement officers “on the streets” with no place from which to function.

The sources claim that all this has taken place while the minister with responsibility for the Police, Sir Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, remains mute on the matter.

Prior to the October 24 by-election in St. Mary’s South, reconstruction of the original Station had been taking place at a feverish pace, Bolans residents say.

But since the victory of Opposition candidate Kelvin “Shugy” Simon, they report that the work appears to be stalled – just like other civil
works in the constituency.

  4. I attended a technical meeting on January 8th 2024 to discuss the imminent demolition of this building by mid February. I hope this shed light on why all tenants of the Jolly Harbor building have to find someplace else to go.

    • The police force are employees of the State. It’s the governments responsibility to find housing to serve as a police stations, temporary or permanent.

    • @Smh…regardless of all the tenants have to vacate the building…

A…have all the tenants vacated the premises, or just the temporary offices of the Police Station?

B…those responsible for the payment(s), on the lease, would have to be given notice at a prior date, and in this case because it’s law enforcement a critical part of the community, especially now with the escalation in crimes, why wouldn’t the government or PSC or whom ever is responsible for the lease make arrangements prior to leaving, at another facility, so that there is a seamless and smooth transition? This would mean, PPP – Piss Poor Planning and PPM – Piss Poor Management, correct?
