MP for Rural West, Richard S. Lewis, has taken action to address safety concerns on the Five Islands Main Road leading to Galley Bay, where overgrown bushes and trees had severely obstructed traffic and created security risks.

In a recent statement, Mr Lewis described the stretch as “a disaster waiting to happen,” highlighting that the dense vegetation not only impeded the two-lane traffic but also provided potential hideouts for criminal activity.

“My team and I cleared the stretch of road of the bushes and overgrown trees that impeded the traffic. We now have a safer environment for passersby,” he said, while emphasising the need for ongoing maintenance.

Mr Lewis expressed hope to engage local hotel operators in the area to collaborate on keeping the landscape well maintained, noting that protecting the environment benefits the whole community.

Despite limited resources, Mr Lewis acknowledged the support of his assistants Kyron Simon and Craig Mason in completing the work.

The MP also called for greater financial empowerment of elected representatives, criticising the current Constituency Allowance of $2,000 per month as “woefully inadequate.”

“It is time for a Constituency Development Fund to be established. Let’s get it done,” he urged.

Concluding his statement, Mr Lewis said, “Action speaks louder than words. The work continues…”

  1. Squaddie. Lovell could do well with him and Lewis. That is the best combination for UPP. But the Chaos Demon and the Puppet go have something to say about that. Mr Lewis doing a good job but Five Islands people very ungreatful. Me know. Me live with them all my life. Mr Lewis, you ever hear the word sustainable, well what you doing is not sustainable. The place look good and everybody say you great, then two heavy shower of rain and we back where we start and the place look the same way like before and everybody forget it was you had clean it. Put your strength in something that last. The Dawg say you have money so put that too if you have in things that last. We need a nice little club house. Build one and put one of your children name pan um. Everybody must remember that is you who do that. Forget about cutting down the bush. Let Public Works do that. That is they job. Get smart act smart.
