Independent MP Anthony Smith has urged both sides of Parliament to work together to address the challenges facing Antigua and Barbuda’s Social Security Scheme.
Speaking during Monday’s Lower House session, Smith criticised the United Progressive Party (UPP) for spreading “misinformation” and accused both major parties of contributing to the scheme’s financial struggles.
“What the scheme needs is prudent investment to secure its long-term viability,” he said, calling for immediate action based on reports from the Social Security director.

Smith argued that the UPP had been “hypocritical” for criticising government borrowing from the scheme while also doing so when in power.
He stressed that reforming the Social Security system should not be treated as a partisan issue.
“This is a national matter that affects the most vulnerable – our elderly, sick and children,” he said. “We must rise above political noise and build a sustainable system for all of Antigua and Barbuda.”

Because of the constant waste of social security dollars over the years and the non payment of social security deductions for a vast percentage of government employees over the years, the scheme is in dire need of money or it will not be able to pay current pensioners beyond 2030. That is why the government is so hasty and desperate about the Jolly Beach investment to see if it will bring some badly needed monies into the scheme. Even with that investment and whatever potential or failure that might occur from that, Social Security might be forced to increase the pension age to 70 as thousands of citizens reach pensionable age over the next few years and will begin to make claim to Social Security. Senior Citizens are paying dearly for all the wastage that has taken place in Social Security over the years. If some of us live to be 75 plus, we might be struggling to get a pension. Mark my words!
Again Audley, you’ve made some very valid points.
However, let me throw something more disruptive in the mix that many people have sadly overlooked.
Too many Western countries have been going down the route of raising the retirement age, but if you look very closely at these same said countries, they have wasted so much of their taxpayers money that they’ve had to find other nefarious ways to financially disrupt our lives.
Remember, these same said politicians will NEVER (and I mean NEVER) admit to their financial misgivings, disasters and mess – as many have witnessed here in Antigua.
This collective political age “retirement” scam and collaboration is only going to continue until they eventually cease to pay any of us pensions at all.
I feel sorry for the next generation of children growing up with the current crop of disruptive and financially inept globalists; because when they become adults, they’ll be asking “What was a pension?
Anthony Smith is talking from both corners of his mouth, failing to place the blame, just where it belongs. Your treacherous behaviour, has caused you much pain and embarrassment, that you dare not speak the truth any longer.
Your conciliatory presentation to the house is quite out of Character, knowing the herculean efforts made by the UPP, to keep the Social Security Scheme a float, after being ravaged by the Antigua Labour Party Government, time after time.
You should be calling on the Government, to find meaningful ways to put the money in NAMCO.into the Social Security Scheme, so that pensioners can get their pension on time..
I ways look forward to Phillip’s and Brix’s comments since they have insightful comments to make. quite good points.
Makes one wonder the numbers behind on what’s going on why isn’t the current workforce enough to supply the current pension demands?
USA have a similar issue which they pension is running low and said to run out around a decade from now which was proposed to lift the cap on the top 1% to contribute more. But this is urgent so obvious can’t cast a blanked on an issue without knowing exactly the numbers which MP Walker brought up during the session.
If we knew more things could be recommend like CIP which is said to provide so much income to country to be put into the SS funds for relief so fund the incoming wave and do everything possible to not increase retirement age since I believe the #1 priority is to have us work-less less hours. In a world which is so modern how are reverting retirement ages, stagnant wages while producing much more in the same time without return the lease any government can do is give old people a happy life after work.
This dude Anthony Smith (Benedict Arnold I mean) cannot even be honest to himself and admit ALP administration is responsible for destroying Socisl Security and expect me to vote for him next time around
Every person should always have a choice as to how he wants to live his life, it’s called ” civil rights”. When government infringe on your Liberty to live freely, then turn around and want to dictate that freedom, then it’s no more freedom, but merely a scheme to suppress the people.
Social security is one such scheme..To allow people the freedom to live their own life, SS should be a choice, not something that’s mandatory and is force down the throats of the citizenry. No one is a better steward of ones own assets, and for any government to have the gall to think they can do better with your money than you, is as blatant a violation as it can get.
It’s the same thing with banks, they are all schemes. When a bank can dictate what and when you can use your money, those options are the very things that were designed to keep the public enslaved to the system.
So the best foot forward are for people to fight for their rights to make their own decisions when it comes to SS and the banking system in general. These programs should be a choice, not some draconian rules that blind the people from their own liberty.
So there is where the problem is folks. Stop putting your lives totally in the power of the government. Fight for better standard of government, than to come back later to complain.
Take the power back your own hands. Demand better.
Life is for the living, not the dead. Why put money into a program that only benefits you for a short period when you’re close to death? Think about it. Social security was invented as a ponzi scheme, not some savior as it is made out to be.
Live your life now..invest in things that help you right now, not when you are near death.
Let the dead burry the dead..live life!!!
