The Cook’s Landfill has become a greater health hazard to the residents of the St. John’s Rural West Constituency.
The frequent landfill fires have exposed the residents of Five Islands, Hatton and Denfields to toxic smoke. We, the villagers, are waking up to a blanket of toxic smoke over the village far too often.
This has reached a breaking point and it is time for real solutions to this perennial hazardous situation. The relocation of the Five Islands Primary School closer to the landfill is even more reason for the issues to be expeditiously addressed.
For the health and safety of the residents, I again call for the immediate overhaul of operations at the Cook’s Landfill.
The following issues continue to plague the operation of the landfill:
- There is a serious shortage of technical staff. There is reactive management rather than being proactive.
- The landfill is more overwhelmed than ever before.
- Standard procedures are often ignored. This includes failing to cover landfill waste with soil at the end of the workday. As a matter of fact, not enough soil is provided to cover the waste.
- Staff members are suffering with inadequate equipment, and are not being provided with the training they require to address the deteriorating situation.
- There are serious waste compaction issues
- There is very little waste separation, if any. Everything, including combustibles and raw sewage, goes to the landfill. Waste separation should ideally start at the producers of the waste.
- The tyre shredder is still not in use.
- Worst of all, the authorities have failed to seriously address the toxic fires and the litany of other problems at the Cook’s Landfill.
It is therefore imperative that the Ministry of Health and NSWMA immediately chart a completely different course to bring a hasty resolution to the recurrent toxic landfill fires.
Further, they must urgently seek the expert advice and assistance required – from outside of Antigua and Barbuda, if necessary.
Finally, I urge NSWMA to implement a proper Waste Diversion Plan and Policy, to ensure constant health hazards and operational issues become a thing of the past.
Richard S. Lewis MP

Look ALP and Gaston mashup the rubbish heap and all, I can remember when the upp was in office the dump had scientific personnel and equipment which suddenly caught fire when ALP won in 2014 and the personnel fired and replaced by molwyn family members, ALP mash up everything, the cooks landfills is treacherous for private contractor equipment to operate, help us.
Do you really want to Gaston? If you donthat gies against your stated policy. Have you forgotten that it was you who said that constituencies who rejected your party would not see the light if day? The landfill is in the constituency of St Johns Rural West and is represented in parliament by opposition member Richard Lewis. What you didn’t plan for nor realized is that there are three hotels and the UWI Campus in the district and they are up wind. You have now brought the Five Islands Primary School closer to the smoke, vermins, rodents and smell. We wait to see the true level of your leadership. Richard Lewis will not let you sleep comfortably while his constituents suffocate
This whole week Five Islands was covered in smoke. How can this be ok? It is definitely not healthy. What would be the long term effects of this? And the thing is, I’m hardly seeing anyone from five Islands saying anything.. For the entire week I went to work smelling of smoke. We need a solution so that this doesn’t happen again
Doesnβt matter which friggin party is in charge. This is a disgusting disgrace and these people should be ashamed of themselves!!!
They can overnight increase car registration tax by 40% but leave this hazard and people who have to suffer day and night every so by me year without recourse is a friggin health genocide!!!
Iβd be burning down EVERY SINGLE ONE of the public servants homes if I had to suffer for these scum bag dip sh!ts! F-huk them ALLLLL!!!!
You seen the SIZE of Gaston Browneβs friggin house he has been building now for the last two years?!! Why do these people who are public servants think that they can blindly rob Antiguans each day and enrich themselves and Antiguans canβt see what is happening and on top of suffer daily by inhaling toxic and hazardous smoke!!!! Bull shitttt!!!
