Today Mount St. John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC) employees kicked-off Autism Awareness Month by celebrating “Light it up Blue”. Each April 2, organizations around the world “Light it up Blue,” in commemoration of the United Nations sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD). “Light it up Blue” is a unique global initiative that kicks-off Autism Awareness Month and helps raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Many employees wore the color blue or shirts with the phrase: “Autism – Accept Different” as a way of spreading autism awareness and participating in the international “Light it up Blue” initiative.
“Today we empower men, women, boys, girls and their families by eliminating all myths and embracing the differences of autism,” said Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, MSJMC Chair of Pediatrics. “Sustainable development must equally include the participation of persons living with autism and the elimination of any obstructions to integration within society. Happy World Autism Day!”
