Mia Mottley Secures Third Term as BLP Sweeps All 30 Seats in Barbados General Election

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has won a third consecutive term in office after her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) captured all 30 seats in Wednesday’s general election.

State broadcaster CBC Barbados reported early Thursday that the governing party secured a clean sweep of the House of Assembly, extending its hold on power for another five years.

The result sees opposition leader Ralph Thorne lose his seat and leaves Parliament without an elected opposition presence.

Addressing supporters on election night, Mottley described the outcome as a mandate for social and economic reform.

“Our mission first and foremost is to stop poor people from being poor and to remove injustice wherever it exists to create opportunities for people,” she said.

The 60-year-old leader, regarded as one of the Caribbean’s most prominent political figures, also pledged to protect Barbados’ democratic institutions as the country marks 75 years of universal adult suffrage.

During the campaign, the BLP focused on economic stability, cost-of-living pressures and strengthening Barbados’ international voice. The opposition campaigned on crime and infrastructure, arguing for greater attention to domestic concerns.

Barbados, with a population of about 283,000, now enters a new parliamentary term under a government with a decisive mandate. Attention is expected to turn to how the administration delivers on its promises.

  1. Please report accurately.
The party did not secure its hold on power for another five years.
A party secures another FIVE years if the elections cycle lasted five years.
Since 2013 there has been only one five year elections cycle.
The next elections was held in 2018.
Then followed by a snap elections in 2022, months short of four years.
This again is followed by the 2026 elections held months short of four years.
So when leaders boast of multiple terms it is nothing short of disengeniousness.
An elections where the incumbent enters with an advantage which is not performance based is not fair.
This is the third result for Mr Mia Motley in which she has been given a total mandate.
Why hasn’t she legislated fixed date elections?
Why does she feel the need to catch the opposition off guard?
All parties should begin on an even platform.
That means all.candudates should know at the very same time when the elections will be held.
A government which wants to call an elections catching the opposition unprepared is a government which is itself not convinced that it has done as well as the people expected.
So, while Mr Mia Motley will brag and boast of three terms I will say that the are not complete terms and they have not been won fairly.
