The mother of a woman sentenced to 27 years in prison for killing a 66-year-old, Jane Finch, in Antigua says her daughter was failed by the mental health system.
Leandra Fontaine said that her daughter, 24-year-old Brittany John Baptiste, was mentally ill and had shown signs of distress long before the fatal incident in 2021. She said repeated attempts to get help were met with inaction.
“They told me she had to commit a crime or hurt herself before they could help,” Fontaine said. “Now someone is dead, and my daughter is in prison.”
Brittany admitted to killing Jane Finch while hallucinating. A psychiatrist testified she was suffering from cannabis-induced psychosis at the time and had a history of mental health issues, including ADHD and dyslexia.
Her lawyer has appealed the sentence, arguing it is excessive for a manslaughter conviction and that the judge offered no clear basis for the length of the term.
Fontaine extended her condolences to the victim’s family, saying: “If I could take it back, I would. I’m sorry.”

The mother should probably by imprisoned alongside her daughter! S
After all, she is the one who is responsible for visiting this monster on an innocent public! Then to have her come noe and claim that she was advised by the authorities that her issue would have had to commit serious crime against an innocent, unsuspecting individual BEFORE her deformed biological gift to humanity could be attended to is nothing short of BS!
I understand a mother’s love, but actions have consequences. The victim deserve justice
wasnt she on drugs when she did her crime?
The justice system did what it had to
This is my first time hearing of cannabis-induced psychosis. This makes no sense
All criminals are sorry after their crime.
Faithful National # 1, i searched the universe and have not found a bigger ass than you.
You didn’t go to university. Do you blame your mother for that?
Is a parent responsible for everyone who goes mental?
A parent can give a cholesterol everything except a brain and the strength to resist wrong.
Anyhow I honestly hope that you commit suicide when the court reduces her sentence to 15 years.
Let me say it again. The sentence will be slashed almost by half.
Sentimentality and emotions are not evidence.
They are not court precedence.
They are not law.
Rather than speaking rubbish why don’t you spend some of your free time sitting in the court and learning how it functions.
Well you are not intelligent enough to hold conversations with lawyers to educate yourself.
Lawyers have more profitable things to do with their time than to listen to your garbage so you will remain dunce and write rubbish.
The mother need to go eith her because the way she use to beat her kids all in there head like she don’t care well now she care blame the mother ,make them same infront people and don’t care what she tell people mother am sorry but you was wicked to your children it’s to late it is someone’s mother to
@Faithful National #1 – You appear to be totally ignorant on the subject of mental health and also not aware of the reality of the present system. How can you blame the mother if her daughter became mentally ill unless she created an environment that was toxic to her daughter?
The problem that the mother pointed out was that she tried getting help from authorities but could not get the help. Now, I can attest to this situation and it is quite true that before they help you, the individual must be deemed unsafe to the public, which might be too late – as in this case. THIS IS A REAL ISSUE. So yes, the authorities/the system might have failed both Ms. Finch and the mentally sick young lady.
Your comments amounts to ignorance. The situation is really unfortunate and I would extend condolences to the Finch family.
I am no saint, but I’m wondering if Faithful #1 is that same fool ” from the sideline”?
They seem to talk with the same ignorant sentences in their appeal for attention.
If these are the very ignorant people who voted Gatson Browne back into office, no wonder our Justice system is as inept as it is in fixing anything, crime wise in my Beautiful island.
So who’s gonna tune in at 8pm tonight to listen to more of their ignorance?
Mental illness or not. Someone is dead by your daughter’s hands. You failed your daughter!!!
Your daughter should have been locked up long time since she was a threat to society.
Now that she’s behind bars, she can’t be as much of a threat.
There is some truth to what she said. But the responsibility rests with the family members including the mother to make certain that the daughter got the help that she needed. Don’t wait until she has committed this heinous act to blame the system. If your daughter was mentally challenged and you know it, for God’s sake ensure that she is helped. You as a mother failed her just as much as the system failed her. Everybody in this place always seek to blame others and never take responsibility for anything.
So she had early signs before her use of THC and its reasonable to assume as most sufferers of Mental disorders gravitate to Thc abuse to calm their moods and feel some normalcy and when that calm passes the repeat and repeat that ritual until over time Canabis induced psychosis is obvious and clinical intervention becomes necessary before this population breaks the law and its so important that they family is 100 percent supportive to this population at every turn and bend on the recovery process
All of you who are talking about blaming the mother because she must have not raised her daughter right, have any of you ever in your lifetimes had to deal with someone who suffers from illnesses of the mind?
Worse yet, we if you are dirt poor and cannot afford a private doctor?
For these people help seems sometimes non-existent. Until something major happens, then everyone jumps up on the bandwagon.
I presently know if a young man who has been diagnosed as a schizophrenic, he claims to hear voices in his head, his family are not educated and his mother lives abroad. She has tried. She took him abroad with her. She got him to doctors who diagnosed him and prescribed medication for him. She got him a job, he was working until one day he just stopped, refused to go home and ended up being deported, at his suggestion. Now, if he does something ignorant and stupid, do you blame his mother?
Our mental health system needs some upgrading to allow for persons who have these illnesses to be taken off the streets, placed in facilities where they can be careful for, monitored, and when it is deemed safe to be out be put in a half-way house type situation where their actions can be further monitored. Sometimes these people can be re-integrated into the society and sometimes not.
It seems we have alot of people that are ignorant on this platform. I wonder what their circumstances are to be so indifferent to this mother’s opinion. I wonder if the live in a perfect household with perfect children. Perhaps they have had a life with no adversity. Or could it be that their lives are just as bad and they just want to spew nonsense.
How could you blame the mother. Yes, she may not be the best parent, but do you think this is the result she wanted for her child. She states that help was sought multiple times with no relief.
Let me tell you that it is societies fault and there is more to come because all Antiguans do is chat and pretend the are something so far from their reality. While politicians buy them with a turkey and a ham or a Chinese bicycle the breaker down after 2 weeks. Instead of pushing for social services and a properly functioning education system, they prefer to spend their money on fetes, KFC, cologne, hair …..
I hope those who are so quick to judge, go and research metal illness to get and understanding before they speak or write. Perhaps then they will understand what they are talking about and why more of this is around the corner if not already here.
Just like they calling for the death penalty for the killer of Chantel Crump, they need to kill this piece of shit too. It’s the parents’ responsibility to raise their own children not anyone else’s.
Killing Brittany JnoBaptiste will make sure that piece of garbage never kills again and sends a clear message to all that this shit will no longer be tolerated.
Everyone screaming for the death penalty for Chantel Crump. Jane Finch also deserves the same justice as Chantel. Kill Brittany JnoBaptiste and be done with it. Justice will be served then.
Couldn’t have said it better, well said, and that goes to the other individuals as well ⚖️😠😤💩💩💩⚖️🕛🔒🗝️
