Community-Led Initiative: Affordable Mosquito Traps for a Climate-Ready Antigua and Barbuda

The Department of the Environment (DOE) Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment, in Antigua and Barbuda is delighted to announce a community-driven initiative to provide affordable mosquito traps to the public, as part of our commitment to preparing communities for the challenges of climate change.

These innovative traps, made available through participating community groups, will not only help reduce mosquito populations but also the proceeds of the sale will contribute to building climate resilience within local communities.

In an effort to create a more climate-resilient Antigua and Barbuda, the DOE has teamed up with participating community groups to make cost-effective mosquito traps accessible to everyone.

These traps are an essential tool in mosquito control and play a significant role in mitigating the risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases, particularly in the face of changing climate conditions.

To support this initiative, we also calling on the general public, including businesses, to purchase mosquito traps from participating community groups and distribute them among their employees.

By purchasing these traps, you not only protect your loved ones but also invest in a sustainable future for Antigua and Barbuda.

For more information, if you want to partner with the DOE to sell the traps or to get traps for your employees, please contact Ms. Lakeea Allen at the DOE at 462-4625 or via email at [email protected].

The DOE has already distributed over 8,000 mosquito traps to government workers, community groups, and various institutions.

These traps have proven to be highly effective in reducing the reliance on chemical interventions, making them an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution for mosquito control.

By supporting this initiative, you are actively contributing to a greener, healthier, and climate-ready Antigua and Barbuda.

Join us in this collective effort to create a more resilient and sustainable future for Antigua and Barbuda. Together, we can combat mosquito-borne diseases, minimize the reliance on chemicals, and prepare our communities for the challenges of climate change.

The Department of the Environment (DOE) in Antigua and Barbuda is committed to environmental conservation, climate resilience, and the protection of natural resources.

Through various initiatives and programs, the DOE works tirelessly to create a sustainable and climate-ready future for the people of Antigua and Barbuda. For more information, please visit www.environment.gov.ag.

  1. Question(s)…

1…were the Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes which were, and are still being genetically engineered and modified, and released in the wild in places like Florida, ever released in the Caribbean?

    2…why not encourage…

(i)…the utilization of plants such as our Fever(lemon) grass and incorporate them around homes, gardens, public green spaces etc?

(ii)…encourage research and development for such things as neem and said Fever Grass(from culinary to holistic uses to citronella oils etc).

(iii)…from the Venus Fly trap to Monkeys Cup etc are great plants which attract, feed and thrive on insects. Many of these plants need soil which are easy to maintain and once established can be great in gardening/landscaping as well.

While, I have no problem with the advancement in technologies to trap and control such pests/insects, I could be wrong, but I rarely see these Corporations which are making millions from these new products, promoting or touting other remedies.

The sale of these mosquito traps are gonna make a few people very wealthy. Hey…supply and demand!

  2. Something fishy is around, mosquito trap? Maybe the real trap this environazis wanna say POCKET TRAP. And waiting for more crazy ideas to happen from THOSE GUY’S,the most blatantly lies pass already and still affecting all of those who followed INCLUDED ME SELF.

  3. Picaridan (sp) is a derivative of black pepper and does work well on the 23 species of mosquitoes we have here in Florida.
It also repels deer flies (not sure if you have them in A&B) but they’re awful.
One should still be able to buy mosquito coils if you want them.
