Mitzi Allen Receives Gold Medal for Her Groundbreaking Work in Media
On December 5, 2024, Mitzi Allen was awarded the Governor General’s Faithful and Meritorious Service Award – The Gold Medal for Outstanding Service in the Arts and Cultural Development.
A trailblazer in broadcast journalism and film production, Allen’s career is defined by decades of innovation and dedication to the Caribbean’s media landscape.
As managing director of HAMA Inc., she has produced five feature films, four television series, and numerous documentaries that highlight Caribbean identity and address pressing social issues.
Allen broke barriers early in her career as CFTO TV’s first Black reporter. After relocating to Antigua and Barbuda, she co-founded HAMA Productions, a cornerstone of the nation’s film industry.
Her commitment to education has seen her lead workshops for youth and professionals, fostering talent and creating impactful content on issues like HIV/AIDS awareness.
Her achievements have been widely recognized, with honours from the Motion Picture Association of Antigua & Barbuda and, most recently, the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Toronto in 2024.
Allen’s recognition with this gold medal reflects her profound impact on Caribbean media and her dedication to inspiring future generations.
