Ministry of health told to find housing for vagrants sleeping at CMC

12

Cabinet Notes:

The CMC complains of the vagrants who occupy the building’s cover for sleeping at night.

Several large glass windows have been broken, and the disheveled front of the building acts as a deterrent to doing business within.

Finding housing for the homeless men has been assigned to the Minister of Health.

  1. We are very busy right now finding housing for our Cameroon 🇨🇲 tourist from Africa…..we’ll talk to you later.
Give us couple years soon reach you.

    • Yes I
Right now is the Cameroons and Free Work Permit for CARICOM Nationals.

Locals can wait til next election 4 attention.

  2. This isn’t just a housing issue. Many people sleeping rough have alcohol and substance abuse problems and some may have poor mental health. It needs a coordinated response and long term support to help individuals to help themselves. Recovery and rehabilitation is not going to happen even if housing is provided. It’s a much bigger challenge than that.

  3. Misleading. The above picture of the vagrants is not at CMC. That is at the market.
Why oh why do we always try to deceive?

  4. St. John’s city needs ordinances passed in Parlaiment to give the police the authority to remove vagrants from the street. And not only vagrants, but also stray dogs and goats. We are saying that we are moving the country to the next level. However, if you do not do something about these unsightly things in our main and only city, we will always be a shanty town. The vending is disorganized and very unsightly. I have suggested many times to SJDC to build market stalls, just like what one sees in all developed countries and only allow these stands to be used in the city on spots where the SJDC decides. That uniformity will enhance the look of the market and the town. Those vendors that do not want to rent such a stall can be placed in a special area out of sight, such as the parking lot at PDO or the parking lot at Multi-Purpose Centre. If I were a tourist coming off a ship walking in town and seeing the number of vagrants, I would return to the ship. Apart from Covid you would be scared to catch any other disease that these people may have. We need to take care of this problem with some urgency and political guts.

    • Whilst the beautifying aspect of a country must be taken into consideration, it also MUST be borne in mind that we human beings cannot just have our human rights violated by being forcibly removed from the streets, if in fact we are not breaking any Law of the land, because that would be a violation of our God-given human rights, & if ordinances were to be passed to violate such rights, then such ordinances would in effect be opening a floodgate for all manner of violations to occur, with corrupt law officials wanting to put their filthy hands on any & everybody under the guise of “Oh, you’re just a vagrant, so I have the “legal right” to hand search your body”.
It has been said, that the prosperity of a nation is measured by how well the nation takes care of the poor & downtrodden, so the nation needs to step up & help these our brothers & sisters, employing a holistic approach, including a humane approach to medical & psychological intervention where applicable, rather than just providing lodging & food, which inevitably would be tantamount to just putting a bandaid on the problem, figuratively speaking. Salaam.

  5. WHERE are the family members of these vagrants? WHY don’t they take responsibility and assist? WHY is everything left upon the government to do? There is no way I could have a family member living on the streets in that condition.

We ignore our homeless relatives, we abandon our elderly to nursing homes, we leave our mentally disturbed relatives to roam the country and we leave our children for the teachers to parent…and when it becomes a problem, we expect the Government to step in and do what WE SHOULD BE DOING . We have become a country of selfish, heartless, lazy and uncaring people. We need to do better than this!

    • Agreed, but the sad reality is that these vagrants have long since been abandoned by family, & some of them are even in the grip of drugs, so there IS a problem at hand that needs to be urgently addressed from the roots up, or it will never be resolved.
Best approach, the government & society as a whole needs to inaugurate a holistic plan to permanently & humanely eradicate this ongoing vagrant issue, whilst simultaneously trying to reach out to the vagrants’ family members for additional assistance & support. Salaam.

  6. The Ministry of Health has been given that responsibility. Therefore nothing would be getting done in this matter. For that is a do nothing Ministry. We would be waiting and watching to see what both Molwyn Joseph and Samantha Marshall do in this vagrants matter.

  7. Our Country has a right to take care of those who in this population and look to see through an assessment process who qualify for assistance not any irresponsible father who wants to take advantage of the system or is an alcoholic by choice and has family members that can assist him but choose to be wayward and to neglect his family sometimes you see strong healthy men in the food lines that are retired civil servants that have their homes and families so let get the process thoroughly done and help those who really needs assistance with possible rehabilitation
