Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Barbuda Affairs Deepens Commitment to Youth Development with Cultural Excursion for Interns

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Barbuda Affairs continues to strengthen its commitment to youth development through its dynamic Annual Internship Programme, which commenced several weeks ago. As part of its ongoing efforts to promote mental well-being, a balanced work-life environment, and national pride, interns participated in a cultural excursion on Friday, August 8, exploring Antigua’s rich history and heritage.

The group of enthusiastic interns visited Nelson’s Dockyard, the Interpretation Centre, Blockhouse, and Shirley Heights landmarks that showcase Antigua and Barbuda’s unique historical legacy and offer breathtaking views of the island. The tour provided a hands-on opportunity for interns to deepen their understanding of the nation’s cultural identity, while also taking a well-deserved break from office activities to refresh their mental and emotional wellness.

For many of the participants, the experience was both enlightening and inspiring. “Learning about the history of these sites makes me appreciate where we’ve come from and how important it is to represent Antigua and Barbuda with pride,” shared one intern. Another noted, “It’s encouraging to see that the Ministry values our personal growth just as much as our professional skills.”

“This programme is about more than preparing young people for the workforce it’s about shaping future leaders who understand their roots, value their mental health, and carry a deep sense of national identity,” said Ambassador Dr. Clarence Pilgrim, Permanent Secretary. “Exposure to our history and culture is essential in building the confidence, character, and commitment we expect from tomorrow’s diplomats and decision-makers.”

The Ministry’s internship initiative is part of a broader youth empowerment agenda that combines workplace readiness with holistic personal development. The annual gathering has become a flagship element of this initiative, offering young professionals both learning and life-enriching experiences.
