Ministry of Agriculture extends congratulations to Resa B. Nelson

Resa Nelson

Antigua and Barbuda’s newest Rhodes Scholar and a remarkable young
scientist whose work is already shaping the conversations about innovation in our
region.

Resa’s achievement is entirely her own — earned through long hours in the lab,
academic excellence, and a fearless curiosity that pushes beyond conventional
boundaries.

Her journey from Antigua and Barbuda to Hofstra University and now to Oxford stands as proof of what disciplined vision can produce. She represents the best
of our youth: focused, self-driven, unafraid to tackle complex problems, and committed
to pursuing solutions that benefit communities far beyond herself.
Her research, particularly in turning sargassum into renewable energy sources and
other value-added products, connects powerfully to the direction in which Antigua and Barbuda must move. While her achievement is not agricultural in the traditional sense, it
sits at the frontier where science, environmental stewardship, and agro-processing
meet. This is the kind of thinking that will help us transform challenges into industries,
and natural resources into opportunities.

The Ministry is proud to celebrate her success. Resa’s story shows that our young
people are more than capable of leading in global spaces — not by imitation, but
through original research and Caribbean-centered innovation. Her path is a reminder
that the future of agriculture, agro-processing, and environmental science in Antigua and Barbuda will be shaped by bright minds like hers.

We applaud her accomplishment and look forward to seeing how her work continues to
inspire a new generation of Antiguan and Barbudan innovators.

  1. Honestly speaking from the onset I was wondering where the Ministry of agriculture fits in. I thought it was a mistake and it should have been the ministry of education. But after reading the entire article it became evident that it was on purpose. So if the minister of agriculture wants to congratulate the young lady as a young person, there is nothing wrong in him doing so personally and professionally as a young government minister. Since her students which she said to Dr. Jackie on her show, has to do with stem cells. Then I don’t see where the ministry of agriculture fits. Guess the ministry of health would be better fitted.
