UPP condemns Charlie’s murder and calls on Minister Benjamin to do more to fight crime

Antigua’s Minister of Education, Sports and Creative Industries, Daryll Matthew, has described the fatal shooting of prominent businessman George “Charlie” Barnes as “senseless” and “outrageous.”

Barnes, owner of Charlie’s Gas Station on Sir Sydney Walling Highway, was shot outside his Ottos home late on Friday. Police said armed assailants fired at him in the chest before fleeing in a vehicle.

Tributes have poured in from residents, business leaders and officials mourning the loss of a respected figure. Authorities have launched a high-level investigation and are urging anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigations Department.

  1. You must first start with telling your boss to apologize to the nation for his reckless statement he made to criminals, instructing them to get rid of guns they used to commit crimes, but the question is do you have the balls to do so. Maybe when you come face to face with a thug and he stick a gun in your face you will have the courage to stan up the the piece of shit that passes for a prime minister

  2. Minister Daryll Matthews this senseless deaths as well as others plaguing the country at present is very troubling. These crimes needs to be addressed.

As a cabinet member, you are in a better position than many to do something about the rise in gun crimes and murders, because you can influence our Prime Minister to take drastic measures to defend the innocent, the businesses and our vulnerable children.

We beg of you to use your position to influence the PM, the Police Commissioner and other Law enforcement authorities to resolve rising crimes.

Even if it means a cross party coalition with the UPP and DNA.

  3. When you see in the US that the National Guard have been deployed to cities like Washington DC and soon enough, Memphis and Chicago to address criminal activities, it makes me wonder why the A&B Defense Force isn’t on the streets for everyone to see, working side-by-side with the police, especially in the hotspots. Antigua could use more boots on the streets, whether police or military.

I visit Provo in the TCI often and the army are out patrolling and positioned in certain locations with the police trying to crackdown on the violence there. The TCI has had at least 24 murders this year; their population is half of Antigua’s… The whole region is on fire.

  4. I have a good friend, of course we support different political parties, we always pull each other’s leg as the saying goes,I asked her why is there so much crime in the country, she says Satan cannot correct sin, I was shocked to hear that

  5. Minster Daryll I called you and spoke to you about the people that lock the gate at the cricket field in powells and basically control that facility for there own personal use, you failed to help .. I guess I’m not part of your gang.. the young people need an outlet, bring back the basket basketball courts and give us access to them without having to be apart of the cricket organization.. we need to start with looking after the young people we have become very selfish and short sighted … you are the minister of sports what are you doing for young people… Albert Einstein said the world will be destroyed, not by those who do evil but by those who watch and do nothing…

  8. We cannot build an economic powerhouse and such a peaceful, hardworking, kindhearted, Antiguan , businessman life is ended like this.
George worked hard from a Vechicle body-man his humble beginnings, to opening his gas station, bottle water and ice company and still doing bodywork. It took him over half century of struggling and working hard , with honesty and integrity to get where he was before his cruel death. His is a guy that got no handouts, no state resources to build his business. This nation is all the poorer in loosing him.
Although we must spare nothing in bringing these criminals to justice. Call for external assistance immediately.
We are all to be blamed.
    1) Our education system, too many young men slipping through the cracks.
    2) immigration system needs to be reformed. Too much people are here illegally and still get a pathway to citizenship.
    3) we need to do a better job at guarding our borders, from illegally criminals from entering.
    4) We do not hold our government accountable. Our politicians don’t have to worry about these horrible crimes committing against them and their families. They use our state protection services to protect them and their families. They move out of the unprotected neighborhoods and move into safe zones. They self enrich to the extent that day have full time body guards.
    5) our churches do not talk out against the ills of society. Our church leaders don’t tell the politicians thus say the Lord. They call for a national day of prayer and without repentance they join hand with the unjust men . That victimize those that don’t share the views. That support the nakedness and vulgarity during carnival. In fact they themselves taking part.
    6) the church not using evangelicals outreach sufficiently to reach these criminals.
    7) We need to hold the police force accountable. after Chantel murder the police commissioner promised press conference monthly- none . The use of the military doing nightly patrols.
    8) The legal system must work, for all people. Not just the poor and vulnerable receiving harsh sentences. Take for example a young man/ a boy imprisoned and lost his life in day on remand for allegedly stealing a phone. No bail . Found dead in his cell. You call the police and make a report their response is we don’t have transportation.
I will say this again. These same criminals are going to converge on the tourism sector- which will be easy picking. They are going to destroy the economic powerhouse we are claiming , to be building.
    9) where is the report on the impact of the decriminalization of marijuana.
    10) We need a honest God fearing nation, not one day pretending. We need a democracy that respects our rights, despite our political position.
We need to stop the vulgarity, the violence, the corruption, the use of state resources to enrich ourselves and our families. Equity can lower crime rates. We need to take Antigua back when the village raised the child. When we were our neighbors keeper. We had far less in material success, we were happier with the little, generally. So with all the improvements we need to point our fingers in the mirror.

  9. The government should get solar powered streetlight with camera combination out of china to replace all existing streetlights system and help the police and government solve crime and even deter it.

  10. Antiguans should not rest and let this murder get swept under the carpet. George deserves far better. The nation needs to rise up and demand justice. The business community needs to demand better investment. Tax payers money pays the police and should demand better accountability. To include bringing in deceptive with superior technology.
