SOURCE-GIS- MINISTER MATTHEW ANSWERS CALL TO BE A BLOOD DONOR

Minister for Education, Sports and Creative Industries Hon. Daryll Matthew has described blood donation as “sharing the gift of life”. Minister Matthew recently joined Senators Hon. Michael Joseph and Hon. Lamin Newton in donating blood, an integral necessity in the field of health care.

Blood donation is the act of voluntarily giving blood for transfusions or to make medications. Donated blood can be used to treat people in emergencies or those who need long-term care.

Blood donations are carried out at the lab on the second floor of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, between the hours of 9:00am and 6:00pm. The donor must be age 19+ and should be at least 110 lbs. At the time of donation, the person should not present with cold or flu symptoms and should not have donated blood within the past 56 to 60 days.

Upon arrival at the lab, the donor is required to fill out a form. Their blood pressure and temperature are then checked, after which test for blood type is conducted.
