Minimum Wage Review Underway; Committee Weighs Sector-Specific Option

0

The review of Antigua and Barbuda’s minimum wage has officially begun, with the National Minimum Wage Advisory Committee holding its first meeting on Friday.

Pedro Corbin, representing the Chamber of Commerce, has been appointed chairman, while Janelle Wehner Watts of the Antigua and Barbuda Public Service Association will serve as deputy chair.

As part of its deliberations, the committee will consider whether to establish a sector-specific minimum wage rather than maintaining a single national rate. Its mandate includes ensuring that the minimum wage keeps pace with changes in the cost of living and economic conditions, while promoting fair pay for low-income workers and balancing the interests of employers and the wider economy.

Attorney General and Labour Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin addressed the committee virtually, urging members to safeguard the most vulnerable while maintaining fairness to all stakeholders.

The 18-member committee includes representatives from government, employers, and trade unions. It is scheduled to meet again next week.

Antigua and Barbuda’s current minimum wage stands at $9.00 per hour, following an increase implemented in January 2023.
