Wayne Martin, the father of last August’s burnt soldier victim Ashon Martin, has confirmed that his son will finally be laid to rest at the St. John’s Seventh Adventist Church on Nevis Street on Thursday 5 April at 9:15 am.

The family had previously bemoaned the long wait and lack of response from police and government officials as to confirm the identity of the unidentifiable body due to gruesome nature of the body’s burning.

After the family came public with their concern on 6 March, Police Commissioner Wendell Robinson subsequently called the family into a meeting to discuss the progress of the investigation.

“We went in with the Commissioner and we [had] a nice little discussion and expressed how I was displeased with the matter and he apologized and said things dropped through the cracks but that they are on the ball [now].”

The family was since then able to get the body at the end of the week following and begin planning for Ashon’s burial.

As a member of the Defense Force of Antigua and Barbuda, Ashon will be afforded a military funeral and his father describes that, “the military will march from the funeral home to the church. The body will be draped at the flag at the funeral home and hat and belt [will be draped] on the coffin.”

Ashon is survived by his lone four-year-old daughter, Ashanae Martin. Ashanae currently lives with her grandmother (Wayne’s mother) in Cashew Hill. Her mother is also a member of the Defense Force on active duty also shares care for Ashanae.

Investigations into the death of the soldier are still ongoing by the police.

  1. This week marks a year since our beloved Ashon Martin was violently taken away from us. His charred remains were finally given to us after months of pain; not knowing if the remains found in the burnt van was that of Ashon, or if he was out there, somewhere.
I tell you it was painful. The worse seven months of our lives. Sleepless nights, no appetite, crying day and night, you name it.
Ashon had a very impressive sending off and we were happy that it went well. Thank God for family and good friends.
It however, appears that this case has been closed. Since Ashons funeral, no one has approached the family about Ashon’s murder. No one has called to see how the family is doing. Ashon’s family has been asking for answers but is being pushed around as always.
Interesting though, two days after Ashon’s murder, in the presence of grieving family and friends, an individual was able to recount exactly how Ashon was tied up, beaten with broken limbs and gunned down. This was reported to the police. As to whether that individual was ever questioned, no clue. That same week another individual who works at a certain place that I will not mention for now, told his friend that the murder was plotted right here ( meaning where the individual works). A few months after the murder, the then commissioner, was on the media and stated that there were two suspects in Ashon’s murder case and that this was a case that would not go unsolved. Really sir!
The family was being pushed around with a DNA result. Every week was a different story as to why the DNA result wasn’t back. It changed from Antigua had to pay its debt to Jamaica before the result could be released, to finally because of the wrong name spelling. Sigh!
We are hoping that one day we will find out the truth about the DNA test.
We beg for answers. Please, where is the printout of Ashon’s phone record? Who made that fatal call to Ashon’s phone? And the million question is, who killed Ashon Wayne Martin?
With new leadership in the police force, we hope, we are hoping for answers.
    Thank You
