On this historic day, we commemorate the moment at midnight on August 1, 1834, when approximately 32,000 plantation workers in Antigua were fully freed from the chains of slavery. Unique to Antigua, our ancestors did not have to endure an apprenticeship program; they gained full emancipation immediately.

Our ancestors’ fight for freedom was not just a battle against physical bondage but also a struggle against the mental chains that held them. In their honor, let us commit to resisting any form of oppression that threatens our liberty today. Only then can we meaningfully sing the songs of freedom and honor the legacy of those who came before us.

As we reflect on their sacrifices, let us also commit ourselves to the ongoing task of nation-building. Together, we can make Antigua and Barbuda a better place, ensuring that the fruits of our ancestors’ labour are enjoyed by all.

As we reflect on their sacrifices, let us also commit ourselves to the ongoing task of nation-building. Together, we can make Antigua and Barbuda a better place, ensuring that the fruits of our ancestors’ labour are enjoyed by all.

It is our duty to preserve the rights and freedoms that were hard-won.

Let us always remember that these rights can easily be eroded if we remain silent. We, the people, hold the power, and we must never allow anyone to oppress us – mentally, economically or otherwise. By standing firm, we honour the memory of our forebears and safeguard the future for generations to come.

Let us all reflect on the past, take action in the present, and build a future where our freedoms are protected and our nation thrives.

Happy Emancipation Day!

  1. Richard Lewis. You are a Liar. Hon. Gaston Browne said on POINTE FM today that you were negotiating with three Ministers from ABLP to become Ambassador to Jamaica.I will never vote for you again. You are a HYPOCRITE.

  2. @ RURAL WEST

Anybody liar than you ABLP supporters, including the deceitful and treacherous Anthony β€˜treacherous’ Smith that has sold his soul for $6,000,000.00?
Let him take it to the grave with him and all the guilt for denying Antiguans/Barbudans the opportunity to β€˜Get rid a dem’. Oh you foolish and selfish imbecile.

  6. Mr. Lewis, it is time for you to emancipate yourself from the torturous treatment you getting from UPP.

Why allow those in the UPP hierarchy be your slave drivers?

Don’t you value yourself? You worth a lot more than that.

Your former colleague Anthony Stuart has set a precedence. Do like him & free up yourself from the UPP’s party whip. Become an independent MP. You have enough backbone to stand on your own.

Being an independent MP will certainly be more beneficial to you, your family and the nation.

  7. Richard Lewis you might be the best Political Leader that the UPP never had just like the pig 🐷 in lipstick πŸ’„ say Harold was the best Prime Minister Antigua and Barbuda never had.
