Maurice Merchant, Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office, has officially taken over as Cabinet Spokesperson, a role previously held by Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst.

Hurst, speaking on Pointe FM, confirmed the transition, citing the need for a younger voice and acknowledging Merchant’s recent performance while he was hospitalised.

“Clearly, he has been doing a marvellous job promoting the government,” Hurst said, adding that he is happy to share the responsibility.

In another development, in-person Post-Cabinet Press Briefings will resume from Thursday, 26 June, at the Parliament Building.

The decision to move away from virtual briefings—adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic—comes amid ongoing technical issues.

Journalists are expected to be seated by 8:50am for the 9am sessions, which will follow the traditional Thursday schedule unless otherwise announced.

  1. Good moves. Thanks very much, Ambassador Hurst, but you need a break, especially from our sub-standard wannde “journalists” like the one caller Nikki. Best wishes to both Ambassador Hurst and Mr. Maurice Merchant.

  2. LMAO. So, just so dem get the rid ah Niki???

    Ohh my.

This is like telling me you are moving from computers back to type-writers!!

  3. You hear what they call it ” promoting the Government”.

So the propaganda stories continues. It’s not even policies and action plans anymore from government…it’s pure propaganda stories.

Sounds like it comes straight from the Donald Trump play book..it’s never a straight answer, it’s always ” let’s wait and see what happens”

Bunch of snake oil talkers these folks are. .

  4. Maurice Merchant has been doing a great job so far, glad to see this made official. Wishing him all the best in this expanded role!

  5. I thought the PM was going to make the Cabinet Spokesperson available to another ” UPP Blue Fly ” since that is the route he is now taking.

  6. @Cleer
It’s not that Merchant is not capable but I agree with Visionary he sounds as though he’s on the toilet forcing, I would suggest he takes a dose of Milk of Magnesia before any more press briefing, sound as though he’s trying to poo poo

  7. I hope and pray 🙏🏾 that journalist Nikki phoenix will still be involved in asking the tough questions that “we” the public want answers to.

Antigua & Barbuda are already under strict control and brainwashed by the state media. Furthermore, the country has a distinct lack of critical and independent thinkers.

That’s why we’ve been STUCK with this cabal for 11 years and counting …

I’d go even further and suggest that many amongst the ABLP members prefer to keep the great citizens of this country, uninformed, unenlightened and unlearned.

🎶 “BRING BACK NIKKI, BRING BACK NIKKI”

  8. Antigua people really love ugly. This is a Cabinet briefing. It simply reports primarily on decisions made by the Cabinet. Neither Max Hurst nor Merchant make decisions. What questions do you expect them to answer? Really. Get a life. I repeat it is a briefing that highlights decisions made by the Cabinet. It keeps the public informed on decisions made on their behalf. If you want answers, the PM is on air for 3 hours every Saturday. Any one including do-do stirrer Phoenix can call in and ask any question and the PM will answer.
