The Community Development and Citizens Engagement Division, under the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation, continues to recognize and honor the centenarians of Antigua and Barbuda, celebrating their remarkable achievements.
Mary Elfreda Elmes: A Century of Faith, Family, and Joy
Born on March 7, 1925, in the vibrant island of St. John’s, Antigua, known as Elfreda Elmes, has lived a life filled with love, faith, and a remarkable sense of humor. From her early days in the beautiful Caribbean to her later years in Houston, Texas, Elfreda’s life has been one of dedication, strength, and a deep love for her family and God.
Early Life and Family:
Elfreda grew up in the Point Area, York’s Village, and Old Runway, where she was raised in a large, close-knit family. As one of 5 brothers and 6 sisters, she learned the values of love, community, and hard work from an early age. Unfortunately, Elfreda is the last of her siblings, all of whom have passed, but their memory lives on in her heart and in the legacy she has built.
Marriage and Motherhood:
Elfreda married James Elmes Sr., and together, they raised an impressive family of 14 children. Elfreda’s love for her family is immeasurable, and over the years, she has been blessed with 30 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Each generation carries with it the wisdom, kindness, and faith that Elfreda instilled in them. Her life has been a testament to the power of love, devotion, and a strong family foundation.
Faith and Service:
Elfreda’s faith has always been at the center of her life. She was a devoted member of St. Andrews Anglican Church in Antigua, where she spent years serving the Lord and growing in her belief. Her love for the Lord Jesus Christ is evident in the way she has lived her life—faithfully, humbly, and with a deep sense of purpose. Elfreda has been an inspiration to her children and grandchildren, always encouraging them to walk in the ways of the Lord. Through her, many have found a strong foundation in their faith, creating a lasting legacy of believers in the family.
Hobbies and Humor:
Beyond her faith and family, Elfreda is known for her many hobbies and talents. She is an avid cook, seamstress, and knitter, often finding joy in creating and caring for her loved ones. One of her most cherished pastimes is playing table games, especially with her family. Elfreda is famously known as the “Domino Champion”, a title she holds proudly among her family and friends. Her wit and impeccable sense of humor make her the life of any gathering. As she always says, “It’s better to make jokes than to curse,” a motto she lives by with a joyful spirit.
Style and Personality:
Elfreda has always been a woman of style, with an eye for beauty and grace. Her favorite colors, pink and yellow, reflect her vibrant personality, and she has carried herself with elegance throughout her life. Those who know Elfreda appreciate her sharp mind and quick wit, as well as her generous heart. Despite any challenges, she approaches life with humor, warmth, and a loving spirit.
Later Years and Legacy:
Now residing in Houston, Texas, with her daughter and son-in-law, Elfreda continues to embrace life with the same joy and faith that has always defined her. Though she now walks with the assistance of a walker, her spirit remains as strong and lively as ever.
With the “help of the Almighty,” she continues to celebrate her days, surrounded by the love of her family.
Elfreda’s life is a testament to the power of faith, family, and love. She has created a legacy that will continue to thrive for generations to come, and on her 100th birthday, we honor her incredible journey, her unwavering love for her family, and her enduring faith.
