Media Houses Cautioned Over Detailed Reporting in Nigel Christian Murder Trial

Several local media houses were recently cautioned by the High Court regarding the level of detail carried in their reporting on the ongoing Nigel Christian murder trial.

The caution reportedly followed concerns that extensive or graphic accounts of witness testimony could risk prejudicing the jury in the high-profile case, which is being heard before Justice Rajiv Persaud and a panel of jurors.

The court is understood to have addressed the issue as part of its responsibility to ensure a fair and impartial trial for all accused.

Judges have the authority to act where publications may interfere with active proceedings, including invoking contempt of court provisions if necessary.

The trial remains ongoing.

  2. Isn’t the court proceedings open to the public? How is publicizing what is available to the public prejudicial?

There are some ignorance in Antigua and Barbuda. Please do not, at this time, remove the privy council as the supreme court of Antigua and Barbuda. Please leave the British monarchy. We are, sadly, not competent enough to be independent (separate and apart).

Our police doesn’t even have basic skills in policing, forensic science, investigative skills, law, criminology, victimology, etcetera.

I have never heard a court express to any news agency they are not allowed to report in details about a hearing that is public.

  3. It seems that the defence ah look excuse to remove this heinous homicide case on a “technicality”.

Our judiciary is already under very close scrutiny for previous delays and postponements.

WE WATCHING THEM LIKE NEVER BEFORE…

  4. Again showing why there must be no Caribbean court that does away with the privy council. Caribbean courts, especially Antigua’s are corrupt and manipulated by government. They are not impartial and fair. Justice in the Caribbean is a joke

  5. In such high profile cases the jury is usually sequestered until a verdict is reached. The judge knows this but I guess the government can’t afford and all inclusive fully paid vacation at a St. James Club; but, they could cut a deal and give them a tax write off.
Damn how could I forget that the tax payers are been milked for millions to cover another high profile case, The Alfa Nero.

  6. Are the jurors not going to hear this evidence ? Where in Anu are you going to find somebody that doesnt know about this case ? Maybe they will give a verdict of accidental drowning and move on.

  7. Beggar man sandal verdict of drowning 🤣. Yes everyone may have heard about the case, but in the Court of law it’s not hearsay, it’s what you can prove. Outside of those who were investigating the case not even many of those in the police force or the DPP office would be privy to the facts much less the general public. Things such as expert witnesses, evidences allowed or exempted by the trial judge. Jurors will not know who are the witnesses.
Not all judges handles matters the same way and if a judge erred in this phase of the trial then the Appellate Courts can nullify the verdict.
There’s a reason why a symbol of justice is an unbalanced scale held by a blindfolded woman.
There are two reasons why many who are guilty of a crime will walk free and they are money and technicality.
