Manslaughter Trial Adjourned for Motorist Charged with AUA Student’s Death

The committal hearing for the man accused of causing the death of a medical student through dangerous driving faced an unexpected delay on Monday.

Karim Edwards, who allegedly struck two American University of Antigua (AUA) students on October 23 last year, resulting in the death of one and severe injuries to the other, had his hearing scheduled for Monday.

However, the Traffic Court was not operational, preventing the hearing from taking place.

The tragic incident occurred when the two students were crossing Friars Hill Road early in the morning and were hit by a vehicle.

Twenty-one-year-old Kenneth Mathew, who suffered severe brain trauma, passed away on November 1, while his 19-year-old companion Priyanjana Das lost her right arm and sustained fractures to her left arm and pelvis.

Initially charged with dangerous driving after turning himself in to the police, Karim Edwards, a 45-year-old accountant, faced an upgraded charge of causing death by dangerous driving following Mathew’s tragic demise.

Magistrate Dexter Wason now holds the responsibility of determining whether there is sufficient evidence against Edwards to proceed to trial in a higher court, where he will face a judge.

The decision on this matter is now scheduled for August 21.

He wreaked of alcohol and he was negligent. Killed the people. Any other person would have been rotting in jail now. This is Shit.
