A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in prison after admitting to breaking into a North Street business and stealing nearly $2,000 worth of goods.
Ramone “Rusty” Thomas of New Winthorpes Village appeared before Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason in St. John’s Magistrates’ Court on Sept. 19. He pleaded guilty to breaking and entering charges stemming from an incident that occurred just two days earlier.
Police said Thomas forced his way into the business around 2:35 a.m. on Sept. 17 and was caught leaving with multiple packages.

He dropped the items and attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended following a foot chase.
Investigators later discovered more stolen items hidden in an abandoned house nearby, including cookware, women’s clothing, lighting equipment, and a children’s furniture set.
The merchandise, valued at $1,905, was later returned to the business.
Thomas initially gave police a false name but was reprimanded and discharged on that charge. Along with the prison sentence, the magistrate issued a restitution order requiring all recovered goods to be returned to the owner.
